Jeremy Lane Sits During National Anthem Before Seahawks vs. Raiders

Alec NathanSep 1, 2016

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane remained seated for "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Thursday night's preseason finale against the Oakland Raidersless than a week after San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick did the same prior to his team's contest against the Green Bay Packers.

The Associated Press (via NFL Network's Ian Rapoport) relayed a photo of Lane sitting during the national anthem:

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said after the game that Lane made an individual decision and he's unsure if Lane will continue to sit during the anthem, per Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

Kaepernick's silent protest continued Thursday night as well, when he took a knee on the sideline when the Stars and Stripes were presented at midfield during Military Appreciation Night at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego against the Chargers

Rapoport posted a photo of the 49ers signal-caller:

According to ESPN.com's Jim Trotter, 49ers safety Eric Reid joined Kaepernick on one knee during Thursday's anthem. He added that the two shared a hug and were embraced by several other players, including former Seahawks long snapper and Army veteran Nate Boyer, once they stood up.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media's Steve Wyche following his initial protest. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

Kaepernick's protest was met with anger across the NFL, and a handful of anonymous executives expressed outrage to Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman regarding the quarterback's actions.

"I don't want him anywhere near my team," one front office executive told Freeman. "He's a traitor."

Despite the opposition he's met over the past week, Kaepernick remained steadfast that he would continue to sit in defense of those he believes are voiceless.

"This is not something that I am going to run by anybody," he told Wyche. "I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. ... If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right."

Lane, who signed a four-year, $23 million deal with the Seahawks in March, sat down during the anthem for the first time Thursday.
