Henrikh Mkhitaryan Injury: Manchester United Star Injures Knee, Doubt for Derby

Manchester United star Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a doubt for the Manchester derby on September 10 after suffering a knee injury while playing for Armenia on Aug. 31.

Per Sky Sports' Peter Gilbert, the 27-year-old injured his knee in a collision with Marek Suchy of the Czech Republic. The knock could keep him out of the Old Trafford clash with Manchester City if his consequent substitution was more than precautionary.

The player himself offered encouraging news, per football journalist Artur Petrosyan:

However, on Saturday, Matthew Judge of Goal reported the injury "could rule him out for up to 10 days."

Judge also passed along word from the Football Federation of Armenia, which said testing on Mkhitaryan was "not encouraging."

Mkhitaryan has played just an hour of football for the Red Devils thus far, coming off the bench for each of his four appearances this season.

Nevertheless, losing him for the derby would be a blow—the former Borussia Dortmund man is an exceptional talent and a goal threat, and his pace and dribbling ability give United a real edge when he's on the field.

As Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News noted, Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is unlikely to be pleased:

The Special One spoke to MUTV (h/t Gilbert) regarding the international break and expressed worry for his players: "We keep eight outfield players and Sam Johnstone as the goalkeeper. We are going to lose the others and we don't know the way they train, the way they recover, the life they are going to have with their national teams."

Should Mkhitaryan fail to recover in time for the derby, United are still capable of beating City—they've looked revitalised this season, and the likes of Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have restored a winning mentality.

The Armenian would give the side a real boost if he were to play, though, and his presence would add to the spectacle for neutrals.
