Arsenal Transfer News: Miguel Almiron Deal Expected in the Future, Fresh Rumours

Matt JonesAug 31, 2016

Arsenal will reportedly move for Lanus midfielder Miguel Almiron in the future, with the player’s agent suggesting a deal could still materialise despite the summer transfer window passing.

As reported by James Gordon of the Sun, with Jack Wilshere departing the club on loan, the Gunners were tipped to move for the 22-year-old. A deal ultimately didn’t materialise, although the player’s agent, Daniel Campos, told Lucas Sposito of Sport Witness that a move could still go ahead.

“Actually there was an approach, but it didn’t go any further,” he said. “I see it more for the future. ... No doubt he’d be delighted to play in the Premier League and for Arsenal.”

In addition, Campos suggested that if Arsenal were to land Almiron from his Argentinian club, it would likely cost them around €10 million (£8.5 million).

Here’s a look at why he’s rated so highly:

According to Sposito, local media have compared Almiron to Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel Di Maria, such is the buzz about him.

While there is evidently a long way to go before before the Paraguayan scales those sorts of heights in the game, he’s evidently a talented operator. Left-sided, energetic and confident carrying the ball, Almiron would have filled the gap left by Wilshere, who temporarily departed for Bournemouth on loan for the season on Wednesday, per BBC Sport's Simon Stone and David Ornstein.

WhoScored.com took a closer look at the kind of qualities the Lanus midfielder would have brought to the Gunners:

Arsenal fans won’t lament missing out on Almiron for too long having conducted some savvy transfer business with the captures of Granit Xhaka, Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi this summer.

Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to see the Gunners scouring different corners of the market, and the Paraguayan's progress will be tracked carefully.

Arsenal Block Yaya Sanogo Move

According to Mike McGrath of the Sun, Arsenal blocked a late departure for out-of-favour forward Yaya Sanogo, with Leeds United said to have been keen to land the youngster on loan.

“Garry Monk was interested in the Arsenal forward, 23, joining his squad at Elland Road for the rest of the season,” it’s noted. “But Wenger has told the Championship outfit he intends to keep the French striker at the Emirates Stadium.”

While Sanogo is unlikely to force his way into the Arsenal starting XI, the Gunners remain a little short up top despite the addition of Perez. Aside from the former Deportivo La Coruna man, Olivier Giroud is their only fit striker, with Danny Welbeck set for a prolonged stint on the sidelines.

It leaves Sanogo in a difficult position, as minutes are surely unlikely for the France youth international. Last season he had spells at Ajax and Charlton Athletic on loan, and he spent 2014-15 with Crystal Palace. However, he is yet to string together a consistent run of games and deliver on the potential many believe he possesses.

Perhaps this will represent something of a chance for Sanogo to impress Wenger and win over some of the doubters that remain at the Emirates Stadium.

Even so, it’s tough to shake the sense that a season on loan in the Championship would have been more beneficial than one on the fringes with the Gunners.
