Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Red Devils Rumours Ahead of Hull Fixture

Matt JonesAug 22, 2016

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted a move for Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is unlikely.

The German has been marginalised at Old Trafford by new Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho, meaning an exit before the closure of the transfer window looks inevitable. When asked about potentially swooping for a big-name player like Schweinsteiger, Rodgers suggested he may not be the right fit for Celtic, per Alison McConnell of the Evening Times (h/t Liam Prenderville of the Mirror):

"

I can get you a marquee signing but they’ve got to be able to press and they’ve got to be able to run. ... I think we have brought in some really top talents who have come in and excited the supporters.

For me it’s never been about the name. But of course if the name is big and he can play, then great, but for me it’s about having the right profile of player who can come in. No matter the age they have to be hungry in every single game and every training session and that’s what I always look for.

As noted by Prenderville, Schweinsteiger has been training with the Red Devils reserves since Mourinho took over, prompting links with the Glasgow club, Major League Soccer sides and a return to the Bundesliga.

For the German, it seems the sooner he can get out of Old Trafford, the better. The 32-year-old endured a testing first season with the Red Devils following his move from Bayern Munich, as struggles with fitness meant he was unable to nail down a regular spot in the starting XI.

James Ducker of the Telegraph thinks that a move away from the Premier League would suit Schweinsteiger at this stage of his career:

There’s still a lot for the World Cup winner to offer. When he was fit at United, he turned in some excellent performances, and he remains a composed presence in the middle of the park. If the opportunity did genuinely arise for Celtic to bring him on board, you suspect Rodgers would jump at the chance.

Gabriel Barbosa to Decide Future

Reported Manchester United target Gabriel "Gabigol" Barbosa is poised to make a decision on his next club after helping Brazil to Olympic gold.

"Up until now, I haven’t really had the time to think about anything because my attention was completely on the Olympics," said the Santos youngster after his team beat Germany in a penalty shootout on Saturday, per Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News. "Now I will celebrate with my family, then I will return to Santos and think about what I should do."

As noted by Dawson, the Red Devils are one of a clutch of teams to be linked with the striker, including Leicester City, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid. Here’s a look at why he’s so coveted:

Gabigol has been on a rapid rise in 2016, shining for his club and impressing at the Olympics, too. However, football journalist Sergi Dominguez is uncertain a move to Europe would benefit the player at this point:

At just 19, it’s easy to see the merits behind the player staying with Santos for another season yet. While Gabigol is a superb finisher and an excellent athlete, his movement, hold-up play and physicality still need improvement.

That process may be easier to go through at Santos without the pressure a move to Europe and a massive transfer fee would bring. United, in particular, have plenty of options up top at the moment; Gabigol, who needs to keep playing regular football to mature as a player, would likely see his development stagnate if he were to make such a move.
