Cristiano Ronaldo Contract: News, Rumours on Star's Talks with Real Madrid

Tom SunderlandAug 4, 2016

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly "on the cusp" of signing a contract extension with the European champions that will see him remain at the club "until 2020 or 2021."

According to Spanish daily AS, everything is agreed with the Portugal captain, and the only detail left to iron out is supposed to be just how long the renewal will be for (h/t Gazzetta World).

Ronaldo struggled to hit his usual heights early in the 2015-16 campaign, but he bounced back to net 51 goals in 48 games for Real, as well as scoring the decisive penalty in their shootout win over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final.

The three-time Ballon d'Or winner then waded through another patch of murky form to lead Portugal to the UEFA Euro 2016 final, scoring a sensational header in the win over Wales in the last four.

Ronaldo isn't afraid to boast his belief that a fourth Ballon d'Or may not be out of the question in January, either, and he thinks he has a "good probability" of winning, per Spanish daily Sport:

"

It has been the best year of my life in terms of trophies, I have won the two most important trophies with my club and national team.

I have always won the individual awards without expectations, they are not everything, I am not obsessed with that.

I have a good probability (of winning) because this year I have won the European Championship and the Champions League, they are very important trophies.

"

Considering how successful the past year has been for the Real Madrid and Portugal talisman, it's perhaps no surprise to hear a contract renewal is in sight, with his current deal set to expire in 2018.

Ronaldo turned 31 in February, which is assuredly part of the reason he'll reportedly remain on the same wages in Madrid, according to AS, per ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan:

If the renewal extends Ronaldo's contract until 2020, it would mean the forward will be 35 years of age by its end, whereas he'd be an even more seasoned 36 in the event it doesn't expire until 2021.

Of course, it's possible Los Merengues could choose to cash in on Ronaldo before the end of his contract should he renew his deal, provided there's a club out there prepared to pay the outlay.

However, it now appears possible Ronaldo could end his playing days in the Spanish capital after all, despite incessant speculation in recent years suggesting a Santiago Bernabeu Stadium exit.

Real fans will be happy to see their star pledge his loyalty to the club's cause, and it could end up being the last major deal Ronaldo signs, unless the evergreen star plans on playing until he reaches 40.
