Darren Sproles, Eagles Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Reaction

Mike ChiariJul 29, 2016

The Philadelphia Eagles and running back Darren Sproles came to terms on a one-year contract extension Friday that will keep him with the team through the 2017 season.

The organization made the announcement via Twitter and provided the following look at the 33-year-old's career highlights with the organization:

The Eagles also tweeted a photo and comment from Sproles as he signed the new deal:

Sproles is penciled in as Philly's No. 2 running back behind Ryan Mathews and as the team's primary punt returner.

The 33-year-old is set to enter his third season with the Eagles. He has made the Pro Bowl in each of the past two campaigns as a return man, with two punt-return touchdowns in consecutive seasons.

He rushed for 317 yards on just 3.8 yards per carry in 2015, but he also made 55 receptions for 388 yards and scored four total touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball.

The 5'6" Kansas State alumnus previously enjoyed stints with the San Diego Chargers and, perhaps most notably, the New Orleans Saints.

Sproles caught at least 71 passes every year from 2011 through 2013 with the Saints, and he also reeled in seven receiving touchdowns in both 2011 and 2012.

Although his offensive role has diminished somewhat in Philadelphia, the departure of DeMarco Murray this summer and the fact Mathews is on the non-football injury list suggests he could be in line for an increased workload in 2016.

Sproles has reached an age when most running backs begin to break down, but because of the fact his speed and explosiveness appear to be very much intact, locking him in for another year is a move that figures to pay dividends for the Eagles.
