WWE NXT Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from July 20

Erik BeastonJul 21, 2016

The WWE draft shook NXT to its core, stealing away some of its finest talent. One of those talents was Nia Jax, who battled Bayley in the main event of the July 20 episode and, in the process, established herself as one of the biggest winners of this week's broadcast.

It was not all that long ago that Jax was still a green rookie, finding her footing in front of the viewing audience as she headed into TakeOver: London last December with a championship opportunity before her. In that match against Bayley, she looked hesitant at times—even nervous. She held up her end of that match, but it was apparent that the then-titleholder had carried the majority of the action.

Fast-forward seven months, and Jax's improvement is startling.

Strong and confident in her work, she has competed in three straight matches that demonstrate how far she has advanced as an in-ring worker. First, she obliterated Bayley, evening things out at one apiece in their intensifying rivalry. Then she waged war with Asuka in a Women's Championship match at TakeOver: The End that established her as the lead villain in the division.

Wednesday, she once again locked up with Bayley, this time in what would be her swan song with NXT. There was no way she could have known at the time the match was taped that she was headed to Monday Night Raw as part of the WWE draft, but it felt like she had reserved her finest performance to date for the third showdown with her old rival.

Though she lost, Jax put an exclamation point on her NXT career by working harder than ever, and the result was a 13-minute main event that has the WWE Universe excited to see what she can accomplish on the flagship show every Monday night.

Winner: Bayley

In the wake of her women's title loss to Asuka back at TakeOver: Dallas this past April, Bayley was inexplicably allowed to fade into the background as focus shifted to other female competitors on the NXT roster.

Wednesday night, she returned to relevance with an impressive win over Jax, pinning her after a super Bayley-to-Belly from the middle rope. The move, awe-inspiring in its own right, was an announcement to Asuka that the hug-loving Superstar is ready to reclaim her throne as the top female star in wrestling's most exciting brand.

A franchise player for NXT, a role that has made it difficult for Triple H and Co. to let her go to Raw and SmackDown, Bayley still has plenty left to give the fans of the brand. With her name back in title contention, expect to see her step up to challenge the women's champion as soon as TakeOver: Back to Brooklyn this August.

Loser: Rhyno

No one expects Rhyno to go on a tear and start consistently appearing in NXT main events, but after he made such an impact a few weeks ago by laying out every member of a tag team match with his dreaded Gore, it would have been nice to see him built into more than a conquerable foe for Samoa Joe.

That is the role he played Wednesday night, as he and the NXT champion battled in a heavyweight war of attrition.

The former ECW star looked great, a capable performer at his age. But one cannot help but feel he has more to offer the brand than showing up from time to time and getting choked out by Joe or flattened by Baron Corbin.

With so much talent making the jump to Raw and SmackDown, maybe NXT would benefit from one more sustained run for The Man Beast, whose passion is still intact.

Winners: American Alpha

Chad Gable and Jason Jordan lost Wednesday night, the excitement surrounding their drafting to SmackDown on Tuesday squashed by newcomers The Authors of Pain, but they were still the undisputed stars of the match.

Jordan and Gable fought through a sneak attack early and suplexed their heavyweight opponents around the squared circle, firing up late and appearing to be on their way to victory, only for the heels to dispose of Jordan into the steel steps and score the pin on Gable.

The loss means nothing to the former tag team champions, especially after the extraordinary response the team received Tuesday night when its jump to SmackDown was made official. The two will move on to bigger and better things, having developed into one of the best tandems in the entire industry during their time with the brand.
