WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from July 14

Erik BeastonJul 15, 2016

Enzo Amore and Big Cass may have suffered a loss to AJ Styles and Karl Anderson Thursday night on SmackDown, but the impression they left on viewers and the strength of their performances earned them "biggest winner" status from the July 14 episode.

Amore continued to excel as the scrappy underdog who is never as good as his opponent but has heart and, more importantly, resiliency. Big Cass, as he has done so many times, exploded into the match late and was on fire, tossing his own tag team partner onto The Club and wiping the heels out at ringside. Though Amore tapped out to the Calf Crusher courtesy of The Phenomenal One, neither he nor Cass has anything to be ashamed about.

The fact of the matter is that Styles, Anderson and Luke Gallows have main event credibility. Whether they were tearing up New Japan Pro Wrestling as members of The Bullet Club or sparring with John Cena on Raw, they are perceived to be at a different level than the former NXT stars.

To put up the fight that they did heightens the credibility of Enzo and Cass ahead of a WWE draft that could elevate them in status and a Battleground pay-per-view that could feature their breakout performance.

Not only are Enzo and Cass future tag team champions, but each also has the tools to excel as singles competitors if and when that time arises. Performances such as Thursday's prove as much.

Winner: AJ Styles

It says a great deal about Styles' performances to this point, as well as WWE's presentation of him, that he can be added to a routine tag team match and instantly enhance the importance of it. By substituting Styles for Gallows, the match pitting him and Anderson against Enzo and Cass took on a different feel.

Rather than a tired midcard tag match lacking meaning ahead of a high-profile six-man tag team match, the contest became one of the evening's marquee bouts, thanks in large part to the presence of The Phenomenal One.

That Styles never takes a night off, never treating a match as less important than any other, has only helped him ingratiate himself in WWE as quickly and flawlessly as he has. Take a look at the back body drop he took during Thursday's match.

Check out how intense his performance is despite the match's relatively low profile in the grand scheme of things.

Styles is a rarity, a hard worker regardless of the stage and a valuable asset to a company few expected him to succeed in this quickly.

Loser: Darren Young

The most damning moment of Thursday's SmackDown was the moment in which intercontinental champion The Miz ordered a video package of Darren Young's career highlights to run, only for the screen to go blank. "I typed your name into the WWE Network search bar, and all it said was, 'Sorry, no results found,'" Miz said, drawing laughs from fans in attendance and Young himself.

Sure, the new No. 1 contender would vow to have his first highlight by beating Miz and taking the IC title, but it was too little, too late.

The fact of the matter is that Young won Monday's Battle Royal in a fluke manner. He had no buildup whatsoever in the form of signature wins and is relying on a Hall of Famer who was last relevant in 1995 to get him over.

It is backward booking destined to do more damage to Young than good.

A technically sound pro wrestler with solid charisma, he has the natural abilities but is in desperate need of a spark from WWE Creative.

This is not it.

Winner: Seth Rollins

The No. 1 contender to the WWE Championship capped off this week's SmackDown with a strong performance in the night's tag team main event, pinning Sami Zayn following a Pedigree. With Kevin Owens as his partner, Rollins got the last laugh over titleholder Dean Ambrose—at least for the time being. The question now is whether he will be able to do on Raw what he has done so many times in the past: beat The Lunatic Fringe in a high-profile bout.

If he can, he will leave as the WWE champion for the third time.

Rollins' role on Raw and SmackDown has been downplayed significantly since his return, but Thursday night, he grabbed the spotlight and shined it on himself, taking center stage during the tag team bout and ensuring that all eyes were on The Architect.

His win ignited a wave of momentum that he will ride into Monday's Raw and his potential date with destiny.
