WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from July 14

The Doctor Chris MuellerJul 14, 2016

Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the results, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show.

Since SmackDown is going live on Tuesdays starting next week, I will be transitioning to doing live coverage instead of the weekly grades and recaps.

Bleacher Report's Erik Beaston does a similar recap with grades every week, so he will still be around to provide more in-depth analysis after each show.

For the final time, let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's SmackDown.

Sasha Banks vs. Dana Brooke

1 of 6

WWE opened the show the same way as last week, with several Superstars giving quick promos to hype their matches for the night. It has been an effective way to build the show over the past few weeks, and hopefully it's something that continues when the show goes live next week.

Back in the arena, Sasha Banks was the first to enter for a match against Dana Brooke, who was accompanied to the ring by Charlotte.

They had a good, physical confrontation, with Banks picking up the win via submission. Her celebration was short-lived, however, as Charlotte attacked her and threw her over the announce table.

The match would have benefited from more minutes, but both women worked hard to make the most of the time they had.

Grade: B-

Notes and Highlights

  • It was cool to see Kevin Owens wearing a Finn Balor shirt during his promo. It's always nice to see wrestlers supporting each other.
  • The way Banks was tossed over the announce table looked painful. She crashed right into one of the chairs the announcers sit in.
  • Brooke gets better at being a heel every week. Her mannerisms and body language are on point. She just needs to work on her mic skills.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev

2 of 6

Dolph Ziggler and Rusev have been in the ring together many times over the past two years, so they have developed a good chemistry.

Ziggler knows how to work with guys who outweigh him by a significant amount, and Rusev is quick and agile enough to keep up with Ziggler's fast-paced style.

The Bulgarian Brute controlled the pace for most of the match by overpowering The Showoff, but Zack Ryder helped Ziggler pick up the win with a distraction outside the ring.

An irate Rusev destroyed the announce table in a fit of anger after the loss, but he didn't break the table, so the announcers still had a place to keep whichever drink product WWE is currently sponsored by.

This was a decent bout, but we have seen better from Rusev and Ziggler before, so it's hard to justify giving them a higher grade.

Grade: B-

Notes and Highlights

  • I love Mauro Ranallo as a commentator, but his reference to Pokemon Go felt forced. Just because something is getting a lot of press doesn't mean he needs to mention it for no reason.
  • Lana needs more to do. She barely interferes on Rusev's behalf anymore and almost never has a chance to deliver a long promo.
  • It will be interesting to see what happens if Lana and Rusev are not drafted together. She was training to be a wrestler, but nothing ever came of it after WrestleMania.

Enzo and Cass vs. AJ Styles and Karl Anderson

3 of 6

The Club and The Realest Guys in the Room continued their feud without John Cena, as AJ Styles teamed up with Karl Anderson to battle Enzo Amore and Big Cass.

Cena was hosting the ESPYs on Wednesday, so there was no way for him to make an appearance like he did on Raw, which meant Enzo and Cass had to fend for themselves.

Enzo usually plays the punching bag until he can tag in Cass, but Muscles Marinara actually managed to get in some good offense in this match.

Unfortunately for the NXT standouts, Luke Gallows' presence outside the ring was too much to contend with, and Amore tapped out to the Calf Crusher.

All four men contributed to a fun tag match to keep the feud going and give The Club some momentum heading into Battleground.

Grade: B

Notes and Highlights

  • Why would WWE put Styles in this match instead of Gallows? The latter needs the win a lot more than Styles at this point.
  • WWE should put a decibel meter on the screen so we can see who gets the loudest response during every show. It would probably be Enzo and Cass or Sasha Banks every time.
  • Amore has one of the best tornado DDTs in the business. Being so light helps his opponents swing him around until he drops them on their heads.

Kalisto vs. Tyler Breeze

4 of 6

It looks like we could be seeing the start of a new feud in the tag team division. After Breezango defeated The Lucha Dragons on Raw, Kalisto took on Tyler Breeze in singles action.

Fandango and Sin Cara were at ringside to support their partners, so it came as no surprise to see them get involved.

After a short back-and-forth contest, Kalisto picked up the win with his patented Salida del Sol. Breeze and Kalisto worked well together, but they didn't have enough time to make their match memorable.

Grade: C

Notes and Highlights

  • Kalisto should have been part of the Cruiserweight Classic. He could have had some incredible matches with the other guys in the tournament.
  • It must be difficult for Breeze to clean his tights with all that fake fur. At least I hope it's fake.
  • It wouldn't be surprising to see WWE add The Lucha Dragons vs. Breezango to the Battleground pre-show.

Miz TV

5 of 6

Following Darren Young's victory in a Battle Royal on Raw to earn a shot at the WWE Intercontinental Championship, The Miz and Maryse had Young and Bob Backlund as their guests for this week's episode of Miz TV.

The Miz rarely shows anyone but his beautiful wife any respect, so it was a little surprising to see him honor Backlund with a video package of career highlights.

Then he tried to play a video of Young's career highlights, but apparently there was nothing to show. The champ and the challenger exchanged some words, with Young showing his more aggressive side by getting right in The Miz's face.

The segment ended without any kind of physical altercation, which was the best way to go. We don't need to see every talk show end in a fight.

Grade: C

Notes and Highlights

  • How many red bow ties do you think Backlund owns? Does he have dozens, or does he just keep using the same one until it wears out?
  • If you didn't love seeing the fans give Backlund a standing ovation, there's something wrong with you.
  • The Miz's Forrest Gump impression was pretty good.

Dean Ambrose and Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins

6 of 6

Seth Rollins sat with the commentary team to watch Dean Ambrose take on Kevin Owens in the main event. It took all of two minutes before Rollins attacked his rival to cause a disqualification.

Sami Zayn came out to even the odds, so naturally it turned into a tag team match during the break. The only thing missing was Teddy Long to make the announcement.

With as much talent as these four men have, it's hard to imagine any situation where they could have a bad performance. They could even make a Judy Bagwell on a Pole match interesting.

None of these men are known for holding anything back, so this was the best match of the night. After a few false finishes, Rollins hit the Pedigree on Zayn to pick up the win.

Grade: A-

Notes and Highlights

  • Who else hopes Shane McMahon names Long the general manager of SmackDown again? I miss that guy.
  • The neckbreaker Owens uses where his opponent's head lands on his knee looks dangerous. No matter how much you prepare, taking a blind hit to the back of the head is never safe.
  • With the exception of Ziggler, Ambrose and Rollins, everyone who wrestled on this week's show has been on the main roster less than two years. The new generation is taking over quickly.
  • It's funny how the two guys who weren't originally in this match were the ones involved in the final decision.

What did you think of the final pre-taped episode of SmackDown?
