Brock Lesnar, Final Deletion and More from the Copycat Mailbag

Alfred KonuwaJul 14, 2016

Brock Lesnar is ready to eat WWE.

Fresh off a dominant victory at UFC 200, Lesnar is set to ride that wave into a live SmackDown on July 19. He'll take on the returning Randy Orton at WWE SummerSlam, meaning one of these men will have to lose his return match.

It better be Orton.

Stone Cold, Lead Pipe Brock?

It better be a foregone conclusion. The only items that should be debatable about this match are how much offense will Orton get and whether this match should be for the WWE Championship.

WWE has beaten this whole Shield thing into the ground, and for about a year now, it has translated into abysmal television ratings.

Raw needed Vince McMahon to breathe life into its ratings this past Monday, per ShowBuzzDaily.com (h/t Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc.), and he's 70. I feel it will all work out eventually, but right now, WWE has a stick of dynamite named Brock Lesnar, and it needs to be doing everything it can to make him omnipotent.

WWE doesn't need to get cute. The solution is simple: Put Lesnar on television as the WWE champion and use the added press to expose casual audiences to up-and-coming stars. Unheralded talents seem to be destined for SmackDown, so maybe the Lesnar-Orton matchup at WWE SummerSlam will be contested for a second world championship.

Question of the Week: #FinalDuplication?

It seemed like WWE blatantly ripped off TNA's Final Deletion, which featured an on-location brawl between Matt and Jeff Hardy. I'm all for it.

The fact that WWE seems to have its finger on the pulse of the entire wrestling industry, especially now more than ever, is encouraging. Outside-the-box ideas in TNA will likely make their way onto WWE television, where people are watching. What's wrong with that?

The same people who complained about WWE mimicking TNA's content were elated when it was announced that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn were going to reprise their Ring of Honor feud on Raw. WWE is currently in a ratings funk and needs inspiration to get out of it.

I also like the idea of The New Day being presented in a serious feud. There is a glass ceiling for black talent in WWE, and it doesn't help that The New Day is primarily presented as a comedy stable. But if this group ever manages to break that glass ceiling and save WWE from this current era's Shield viewership exodus, serious angles like this will help.

The Cass Hurrah?

Pretty much, yes.

The only thing that will affect the staying power of Enzo and Big Cass is Cass' breakout potential as a singles star, but that's not happening anytime soon without fans turning on him. Enzo and Cass caught fire the moment they stepped onto WWE television and haven't let up since; now they're getting the John Cena rub.

These two have chemistry so off the charts that they managed to make a decent backstage commercial for Sonic. Nobody in WWE makes decent backstage commercials about anything. Not even The New Day.

Enzo and Cass were so good in NXT that they didn't even need the tag team championships. This time around, they've already leapfrogged the entire division to come to the aid of Cena, although it's only a matter of time before they become champions.

Once WWE pulls that trigger, it should come through a steady chase that will result in one of the biggest pops of the year, ideally in Brooklyn at SummerSlam.
