Garrett Temple Reportedly to Sign with Kings: Latest Contract Details, Reaction
The Sacramento Kings reportedly added depth to their backcourt Sunday. According to ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman and USA Today's Sam Amick, they agreed to terms with Garrett Temple on a three-year deal worth $24 million.
Temple averaged 7.3 points and 1.8 assists for the Washington Wizards in 2015-16.
The 30-year-old is the second guard the Kings have added in as many days. The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Saturday that Sacramento agreed to a two-year, $25 million deal with Arron Afflalo.
The Kings likely view Temple as a backup for both Afflalo at 2-guard and Darren Collison at the point. The pursuit of Temple might also signal the end of Rajon Rondo's time in Sacramento. Turner Sports' David Aldridge reported the team was shifting its attention away from Rondo and feels comfortable going forward with Collison as the starting point guard.
The Cauldron's Nate Duncan isn't a fan of the Temple signing, since it potentially leaves the Kings unable to retain Seth Curry:
The Kings probably felt the need to go above and beyond with the contract offer given the relatively heavy interest in Temple, per J. Michael of CSNMidAtlantic.com:
CSNBayArea.com's James Ham is a fan of the signing:
The Kings haven't done anything flashy this offseason, which will be somewhat pleasing for the fanbase.
For the past few years, Sacramento has executed a number of ill-fated personnel moves—hiring George Karl, signing Rondo and going after Monta Ellis and Wesley Matthews last offseason—to try to win as quickly as possible.
This year, general manager Vlade Divac is opting for a more sensible approach. The arrivals of Afflalo and Temple wouldn't make the Kings a top-four seed in the Western Conference overnight. They will, however, make Sacramento a better team so that making the playoffs can be a realistic goal in 2016-17.
