Greg Biffle swept both qualifying rounds Friday to take the pole for Saturday's Coke Zero 400. In the first round, he was the only one of 41 drivers to go over 192.100 mph, which gave him a 0.133-second lead. In the second round, he edged out Carl Edwards by 0.050 seconds to clinch the top spot, hitting a top speed of 192.955 mph.
This is Biffle's first pole win since he took the starting honors at Charlotte in 2012, according to the NBC Sports telecast.
Fox Sports: NASCAR congratulated Biffle:
It also showed his final run, after which he described how big the pole win was for him:
Given his slump, even Carl Edwards, who finished second, couldn't help but be happy for Biffle, per Catchfence's Chris Knight:
Behind Edwards was Kyle Busch, who was in a backup car, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., followed by Brad Keselowski in fifth.
While he didn't take the pole, Keselowski was happy with his performance given the circumstances, per Lee Spencer of Motorsport.com:
A ton of humidity at Daytona created a warm, slick track, which made turns difficult. But as the day progressed, the winds began to pick up, which also slowed down some runs.
This is important to keep an eye on for Saturday's race, as these conditions could make for some messy results in a crowded field. What could be a saving grace, though, is that the race will begin at 7:45 p.m. ET, which means the track could cool down while the sun sets, allowing drivers to gain more traction.
