WWE Battleground 2016: Superstars Who Deserve Biggest Push Leading Up to PPV

Graham GSM MatthewsJul 2, 2016

From a highly anticipated WWE Championship Triple Threat match to the latest chapter in the ongoing Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn saga, WWE Battleground 2016 is shaping up to be a star-studded show on July 24.

Not only will it occur mere days after the historic WWE draft, but the event will also serve as a prelude for the biggest blockbuster of the summer, SummerSlam.

That said, every wrestler on the roster is anxious to make as grand an impact as possible in hopes of building momentum. Some Superstars are even more in need of a bigger push heading into Battleground to cement their spots and ensure their matches at the event go off without a hitch.

With plenty of time remaining between now and the pending pay-per-view, there is hope yet for these talented performers who should take center stage at the event.

The Wyatt Family

Few Superstars have been more misused in the last year than The Wyatt Family, who have plenty of potential yet little credibility at the moment. Despite their popularity with the audience, WWE refuses to push them as much as they deserve.

This month marks three years since the Wyatts officially arrived in WWE, and they have spent the better part of their tenure coming up short in feuds versus John Cena, The Undertaker, Roman Reigns and others. They are built to be a dominant force, but thus far in 2016, they have been anything but.

They recently returned from a multi-month hiatus, providing WWE with an opportunity to hit the reset button on their characters. Instead of organically turning them babyface, though, officials opted to keep them heels for the foreseeable future.

While it would have been in their best interest to flip the switch with them, the Wyatts can still get back on the right track in their program with The New Day. However, it is imperative the WWE not relegate them to a comedy act with the entertaining trio.

The Wyatt Family could well walk out of Battleground as the new WWE tag team champions, but in order for fans to take them seriously again, they must once again embark on a path of destruction. Otherwise, they will continue to flounder as an undercard act.

Sami Zayn

Although Zayn's win-loss record as a WWE Superstar has been less than stellar, he remains one of the most over babyfaces on the roster right now. That is in large part due to his awesome underdog persona and tendency to look stronger in defeat than he does in victory.

His long-running rivalry with Owens has been one of the most engaging aspects of programming for the better part of 2016. Now, the two men will look to settle their score once and for all when they go to war one final time at Battleground.

Zayn said on Monday's Raw that the WWE draft could separate both up-and-comers on July 19, so this will be their way of determining who the superior Superstar is at long last.

Regardless of the outcome of their encounter, Owens will be just fine. He has already established himself as a star on the rise in the year he has been in WWE, whereas Zayn needs more of a push in order to accomplish the same.

It isn't crucial he emerge victorious in his outing against Owens, but in the weeks preceding the pay-per-view, he must look like a legitimate threat to his nemesis. He has been a background player for a few months in intercontinental title and Money in the Bank ladder matches, but this bout will give him the chance to shine on his own.

Sasha Banks

Sasha Banks received her first and only shot at WWE gold to date at WrestleMania 32 in a Triple Threat match with fellow challenger Becky Lynch and defending champion Charlotte. She had a phenomenal performance on that historic evening but was unsuccessful in taking the title.

It was Lynch, not Banks, who lost that bout, which means The Boss still has a claim to the No. 1 contender's status. She disappeared from TV following the heartbreaking loss but has since resurfaced on Raw, setting her sights on Charlotte's WWE Women's Championship.

WWE has already done a decent job of bringing Banks back with a bang by having her knock off Dana Brooke and Summer Rae in tag team and singles action, respectively. But she has more work to do to cement herself as a worthy challenger to the championship.

She has stacked up several victories in the past two weeks, but the slightest setback could hinder her momentum. With that in mind, WWE must keep her as hot as possible en route to her likely title match with Charlotte.

Giving Banks more mic time on air would add excitement to her championship chase and cause more fans to rally behind her. Charlotte has been at the mountaintop of the women's division for nearly a year, so it should be a big deal when she eventually drops the strap to Sasha.
