Copa America Results 2016: Latest Semifinal Score and Updated Schedule

Joe PantornoJun 21, 2016

Argentina, the world's No. 1 team, flexed its muscles on Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Copa America Centenario in a dominant 4-0 victory over the United States at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Lionel Messi-led Argentines overwhelmed the U.S., and the Americans will play in the tournament's third-place game on Saturday against the winner of Wednesday's Colombia vs. Chile contest.

Here are the updated results and the remaining schedule after Tuesday night's match:

Argentina wasted no time quieting American supporters when Ezequiel Lavezzi headed a looping ball over a flat-footed Brad Guzan in the third minute.

With the ball from Messi hanging up in the air for a number of seconds, the American goalkeeper had an opportunity to meet Lavezzi and punch the ball away. Instead, he hesitated and was burned, via Fox Soccer:

Messi made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute with a precision free kick from around 30 yards out that curled out of Guzan's reach and into the side netting, via Fox Soccer:

The sublime free kick not only doubled Argentina's lead, but it put Messi ahead of Gabriel Batistuta for the most goals ever with La Albiceleste:

It was the cherry on top of a first half that Argentina dominated, as ESPN Stats & Info showed:

Five minutes into the second half, two became three when Lavezzi played in Gonzalo Higuain, who was all alone against Guzan.

The American keeper saved Higuain's initial shot well, but the rebound came out to the striker, who was unmarked and able to tap in the easy rebound, via Fox Soccer:

Higuain got his second of the night in the 86th minute, when Michael Bradley turned the ball over and Messi was played into the left side of the United States' box. Instead of shooting, Messi lured Guzan out of position and slotted a pass over to Higuain who finished in an open goal.

Given the superiority of its performance, Argentina looked like it didn't even break a sweat on Tuesday night as it controlled every aspect of the game:

Its midfield was aggressive and won every available ball thanks to its blinding speed. On the off chance Argentina didn't win possession, it put heavy pressure on the United States when the Americans had the ball, forcing a number of mistakes and errant passes.

A more skilled team will be playing Argentina in the final on Sunday, whether it be Colombia or Chile. Colombia is led by 24-year-old superstar James Rodriguez, who carried Los Cafeteros to the 2014 World Cup quarterfinals.

Chile is the defending Copa America champion who drubbed Mexico 7-0 on Saturday behind the strike force of Eduardo Vargas, who scored four goals that match, and Alexis Sanchez.

Regardless of which team Argentina plays, there's little question many have picked it to win this tournament because of Messi and its depth of talent.
