Chelsea Transfer News: Alvaro Morata Offer Detailed Amid Latest Arsenal Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenJun 21, 2016

Chelsea have reportedly approached Real Madrid with a £42 million offer for Alvaro Morata, moving ahead of Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain in the race to land the Spain international, who is expected to return to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

Per Raimondo De Magistris of Tuttomercatoweb.com, the Blues are willing to pay Morata yearly wages of £5 million.

According to Gazzetta World, Los Blancos have decided to sell on the 23-year-old, who is still under contract with Juventus. Real included a buyback clause when Morata joined the Bianconeri, and they're expected to trigger the £23 million option, only to sell the player on for a quick profit.

Arsenal have long been linked with the Spain international, and, according to Sky Sport Italia, manager Arsene Wenger has shifted his attention back to Morata with Leicester City's Jamie Vardy reportedly set to turn down the opportunity to move to the Emirates Stadium.

De Magistris added PSG to the mix, as Les Parisiens are eager to find a replacement for the departing Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He also noted Juventus are still working on a deal to keep him in Turin, while Chelsea have already put a formal offer on the table―one Morata is said to be keen on.

Here's a look at the player all these clubs are reportedly chasing:

The transfer saga has seemed inevitable ever since Morata joined Juventus, and after a strong first season in Italy, there were few doubts Real would use their buyback clause.

While Morata endured an inconsistent 2015-16 campaign, he still flashed his obvious potential, and he did enough to earn a starting position at UEFA Euro 2016, where he has excelled.

Morata isn't your typical target man. Juventus use him as a mobile, physical forward who holds up play, puts pressure on the defence and creates openings for others, allowing the likes of Paulo Dybala and Paul Pogba to take care of the scoring.

As a result, Morata's scoring numbers don't stand out, and a shooting slump to start the 2015-16 season didn't help matters. But he caught the attention with a starring display in the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich, and his performances so far during Euro 2016 prove just how dangerous he can be.

Squawka Football shared his numbers after Spain's 3-0 win over Turkey:

His strong showing in that match led to plenty of chatter on social media, and Bleacher Report UK joined in on the action:

Morata will remain a divisive figure among the fans, with some pointing at his mediocre scoring numbers with Juventus and the fact Mario Mandzukic kept him on the bench for large stretches of the season. The Croat proved a better fit alongside summer arrival Dybala, and his experience helped unlock many a defence.

It's easy to forget Morata is still just 23 years old, and after spending a lot of time on the bench with Real, he's only been playing regular football for the last two years. The Spaniard is still developing, and Fox Sports' Aaron West is excited for whichever club lands him:

Incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has always been a fan of mobile strikers who run the channels and create space for others, evidenced by his support of Mirko Vucinic during his time with Juventus.

Vucinic's scoring numbers never stood out, but he was a key part of Conte's setup and put together some big performances in important matches, most notably in a Coppa Italia clash with AC Milan in 2012.

Diego Costa is a better pure scorer than Morata, but the fact the former Atletico Madrid star isn't even a part of Spain's Euro 2016 squad while his compatriot is running the show is telling.

His fit with Arsenal seems less clear, as Wenger expects his main striker to be a scorer, first and foremost, but Morata still has plenty of room to grow, and the Gunners could opt to invest in his potential, rather than immediate production.
