US Open Golf 2016 Leaderboard: Live Look at Saturday Scores, Overall Predictions

Nate LoopJun 18, 2016

Nothing has come easy at the 2016 U.S. Open. Stormy weather washed away most of Thursday's play, forcing the tournament to adopt a relentless schedule on Friday and Saturday in order to get in the final round before the end of the weekend.

The famous Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, was already going to be an exceedingly difficult test, even without players getting thrown off schedule and knocked out of rhythm.

The rain did soften up the notoriously fast greens at Oakmont, but it wasn't enough to prevent the course from snuffing out some of the sports' biggest stars.

After two rounds, Dustin Johnson is the leader at four under. The third round is just getting underway, so here's a look at the live leaderboard from Oakmont:

Oakmont hasn't been kind to many of the big names out on the course. Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson won't see a third round, with the latter actually marked with a withdrawal because he didn't come out Saturday to complete the disastrous second round he had on Friday, per Fox Sports' Nick Schwartz. Through 16 holes, Stenson had a score of 72 (10-over).

Jordan Spieth is still in the tournament but way back in the pack after two rounds with a score of four over. World No. 1 Jason Day has it even worse at five over after his second round.

The big stars are perhaps wondering how in the world Andrew Landry, ranked 624th in the world, is hanging out at the top of the leaderboard. The 28-year-old Texan shot out to the top with an opening-round 66, only to go bogey, bogey and then double bogey over three consecutive holes midway through his second round and lose his lead.

However, Landry recovered at the end of Round 2 with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18, giving him a confidence boost heading into a third-round final grouping with Johnson and Scott Piercy.

"Birdie, birdie to end my second round is a way to get my momentum going in the third round," Landry said, per the Associated Press' Doug Ferguson (via ABC News). "I'm looking forward to it."

Johnson's performance has been remarkable thus far. On a course designed to frustrate and flummox the best of golfers, Johnson had just one bogey through 36 holes. The last time the U.S. Open was held at Oakmont in 2007, Angel Cabrera won the competition with a score of five over.

Bleacher Report noted he has a chance at a record score for the U.S. Open if he keeps up the strong play:

Johnson will have more than just an upstart giving chase over the final two rounds. Veterans Jim Furyk (runner-up to Cabrera in 2007) and Lee Westwood are within striking distance, as is Adam Scott, who is having something of a resurgence in 2016.

Sergio Garcia is also lurking just back of the leaders at two under after 36 holes thanks to putts like this, per Golf.com:

Johnson has never won a major. He's come agonizingly close multiple times, with the most crushing being his collapses at the 2010 and 2015 U.S. Opens. Winning this tournament would have special significance for him, as it's been the tournament where he's endured some of his most painful moments as a pro.

With only a smattering of elite golfers capable of putting pressure on him in the final rounds, this should be the year that Johnson keeps his cool and wins his first major.

Predictions: Dustin Johnson wins, Sergio Garcia gets second, Andrew Landry takes third.
