Assigning Odds to Every Participant in WWE Money in the Bank Match
This year's Money in the Bank match is filled with Superstars who could all reasonably be contenders for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and it is making the outcome harder to predict than usual.
Past MITB bouts have featured a few Superstars as filler. These were guys you knew wouldn't win but could provide a few entertaining spots. Sin Cara comes to mind as someone who has been used this way more than once.
But that's not the case this year. All six competitors are either former world champions or have all the tools necessary to get there.
A few of the participants have a greater chance of winning due to how they have been booked, but WWE tries to surprise now and then, so an underdog could end up with the briefcase.
This slideshow will look at the competitors and assign their odds of winning based on booking logic and future storyline possibilities.
Alberto Del Rio 100-1
1 of 6Alberto Del Rio is a long shot to win the Money in the Bank match for several reasons. The first, and most important, is the way he is being pushed.
Or should we say, the way he isn't being pushed. When Del Rio returned to WWE, it felt like he was being booked as a midcard star instead of the main event player he used to be.
The second reason he is not likely to win is WWE's current direction. The company is building new talent and dubbing this a new era, and Del Rio is anything but new.
Del Rio has also won the Money in the Bank briefcase before, and it's unlikely WWE would have him win it again when there are so many other people who deserve it more.
If you like betting on the underdog, put your money on Del Rio.
Sami Zayn 50-1
2 of 6Sami Zayn is one of the most popular wrestlers on the roster, but it feels like WWE is going the slow route building him up, which means his odds of winning this match are not good.
Zayn is like the new Daniel Bryan in many ways. He is the fan favorite who spent over a decade making himself famous all over the world before finally making it to WWE.
His feud with Kevin Owens will likely continue through SummerSlam so they can have an explosive conclusion to their storyline, so Zayn doesn't need the briefcase to stay relevant.
Zayn winning would make a lot of people happy, but his journey to the top won't be handed to him with a guaranteed title shot. He will have to scratch and claw his way to the top, so when he finally gets there, the conclusion is more satisfying for fans.
Cesaro 25-1
3 of 6Cesaro is a great candidate to win the Money in the Bank match for many reasons, but management never seems to want him to succeed.
The Swiss Superman has had several stalled pushes during his years with WWE, and while he is more popular than ever, the way fans see him might not be how those in charge see him.
Cesaro will have a great career, and he might even win the world title at some point, but this isn't the way he is going to do it.
Cesaro deserves the win as much as anyone, but he isn't a favorite based on his booking history. He needs a few big feuds with top stars before Vince McMahon will give him a shot with a top title.
Chris Jericho 10-1
4 of 6Chris Jericho doesn't need to win the Money in the Bank match at this point in his career, but there are a lot of reasons why he might.
WWE commentators have been mentioning how Jericho came up with the idea for the yearly ladder match a lot lately. It might be time for him to win his own stipulation.
Another reason he might win deals with storyline possibilities. If Jericho wins the briefcase and then goes on another hiatus, it will create more mystery surrounding when he might cash in.
If he isn't there every week, we never know when he might show up again to claim his title shot. It would allow for a truly shocking cash-in, and it would give Jericho what might be his last reign with a world title.
Jericho is not a favorite to win simply because WWE wants to build the next generation, but he's a smarter bet than half the guys in the match.
Dean Ambrose 5-1
5 of 6When Dean Ambrose mentioned the possibility of winning the Money in the Bank briefcase and cashing in during Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins' title match, he created the possibility of an amazing moment.
Seeing all three members of The Shield involved in Ambrose winning his first major title would bring their journey full circle. He would be the last member of the group to win the big one, and having Reigns and Rollins there would make the moment so much more special.
Ambrose is also a good bet because no matter how many times he loses, he is always near the top of the card in major feuds.
With the popularity of The Lunatic Fringe, his record of delivering great matches and the possibility of a three-way Shield feud, Ambrose is one of the smartest bets in this match.
Kevin Owens 2-1
6 of 6Kevin Owens is the favorite to win the Money in the Bank match mostly because of how well he has been booked since his debut a little over a year ago.
The first thing he did on the main roster was defeat John Cena. He already carries himself like a main eventer, so WWE may as well make him one.
Owens is a great heel because he can draw real heat, but if he wins this match, the crowd will explode with cheers at seeing someone who doesn't fit the typical mold of a WWE Superstar defy the odds.
Owens may be a veteran of the business, but he is a big part of the new generation WWE is pushing. If anyone in this match is safe to put your money on, it's KO.
Who do you think will win the Money in the Bank briefcase?
