Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com reported the news on Williams, who has a Thursday deadline to opt out of his contract.
Williams' apparent decision to stick around in Cleveland is somewhat of a surprise considering he was phased out of the rotation as the 2015-16 campaign wore on. He played well to start the season while Kyrie Irving was sidelined, but Matthew Dellavedova ultimately passed him on the depth chart.
The 33-year-old floor general was a key cog toward the end of Cavs superstar LeBron James' first stint in Cleveland. His innate chemistry with arguably the NBA's best player had to play a role in his reported decision to pick up his player option.
Despite his lesser role, Williams may still have more to offer in the future. As recently as last January, he scored 52 points in a single game.
Especially with the NBA's salary cap slated to rise, Williams could have perhaps coaxed more money out of Cleveland or another team on the open market. Instead, he'll provide the Cavs with a bit more flexibility as they tweak the roster ahead of next season.
Dellavedova signed a modest qualifying offer for next season but could be in for more of a fight with Williams for playing time next campaign.
Both have played sparingly in the playoffs, averaging 12.6 and 5.3 minutes per game, respectively. The Aussie does offer superior defense to Williams but isn't as explosive as a scorer.
