WWE Money in the Bank 2016: Updated Match Card, Bold Predictions for PPV
Arguably the most definitive night on WWE's calendar takes place this Sunday, with the 2016 Money in the Bank pay-per-view set to send more shock waves through the company than any other so far this year.
The obvious drama and impact felt heading out of Money in the Bank will come from the show's marquee ladder match, in which six men will compete for the chance to claim a briefcase that guarantees a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
But with John Cena set to face AJ Styles in a dream match, the world title set for a new owner if Seth Rollins can win back what he never lost and The New Day defending its tag titles against three other teams, Sunday night could redefine the WWE landscape.
Here's a look at some bold predictions and a full run-through of what we know about the card so far.
Updated Match Card
1 of 5
There is still a taping of SmackDown before the Money in the Bank card is locked in, but right now, here's what it looks like.
There are arguably three main even matches:
- Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho—2016 Money in the Bank ladder match
- Roman Reigns (c) vs. Seth Rollins—WWE World Heavyweight Championship
- AJ Styles vs. John Cena
Then the remainder of the card is loaded:
- The New Day (c) vs. The Vaudevillains vs. Enzo and Cass vs. The Club—WWE Tag Team Championships
- Charlotte and Dana Brooke vs. Becky Lynch and Natalya
- Rusev (c) vs. Titus O'Neil—United States Championship
Finally, there are two matches set for the pre-show:
- Sheamus vs. Apollo Crews
- Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin
Bold Prediction: AJ Styles Will Beat John Cena Cleanly
2 of 5WWE is billing John Cena's match with AJ Styles as WrestleMania-worthy and the kind of match we'll only see once.
However, history—like Cena's matches with The Rock—shows that these kind of bouts happen more than once, and it's likely this feud will run through to SummerSlam.
But to kick off what will almost certainly be a trilogy of matches between the two, this one should end with a victory for Styles.
It can be a controversial one to increase the heat on him, or it can be a clean one. There are two obvious routes to go down, but after the events of Raw this past Monday, a clean win for Styles would be a smart way to go.
The not-so-subtle message from Cena was that Styles can't get the job done without The Club's influence. WWE should follow that logic and pin the victory on The Phenomenal One.
It would raise his standing ahead of their next meeting, which would probably be won by Cena at Battleground, and set up a third and final meeting at SummerSlam.
Bold Prediction: The New Day Won't Be Involved in Losing Its Titles
3 of 5It will be disappointing for fans of The New Day to read, but its lengthy run as tag champions will come to an end at Money in the Bank.
There is a fair argument to suggest that the trio should go on and have a full year in possession of the straps, but with the odds stacked against them this Sunday, that looks remote.
And they aren't just facing three random teams; they're facing three fresh sides who all have the potential to become great duos in the company.
But despite all that, The New Day will get its shot to win the titles back over the next couple of months—largely because it won't be involved in losing them.
It'll be another team who takes the pin so that The New Day has a legitimate reason to demand a shot at winning back the belts.
And the scenario is likely to be one of The Vaudevillains taking the loss, with Karl Anderson or Luke Gallows scoring the win for The Club.
That will give us Enzo and Cass vs. The Vaudevillains and The New Day vs. The Club in the run-up to SummerSlam.
Bold Prediction: The Boss Will Cost Charlotte
4 of 5
It doesn't take much to work out that, because there's a tag match in the women's division this weekend, not a title match, the woman WWE has in mind to take on Charlotte isn't involved in the reckoning at Money in the Bank.
Sasha Banks has been all too absent from the company's programming of late, but this Sunday should be the scene of her triumphant return.
It would be foolish to have anything other than Banks vs. Charlotte for the Women's Championship in the buildup to SummerSlam, and The Boss coming out on Sunday night to cost Charlotte in her tag match with Dana Brooke is the perfect way to kick things off.
Banks is still the hottest female wrestler the company has, despite the success of Charlotte with the strap around her waist.
If it's booked correctly and starts with a bang here, it could become the hottest feud the women's division has had for years.
Bold Prediction: Dean Ambrose Will Fall Short Again
5 of 5
Since the split of The Shield a couple of years ago, Dean Ambrose's WWE career has been largely comprised of near-misses.
He's tried and failed to capture WWE's biggest prize on numerous occasions, and here, when it looks certain we're all destined to see a Triple Threat match between the members of The Shield at SummerSlam, he will fall short again.
Why? Because it's Kevin Owens' time this Sunday.
Owens has shown himself to be WWE's biggest breakout star in years, and with his sharp, electric promo work complementing his undoubted in-ring ability, he has the full package and is ready to dominate the top end of WWE.
His success in the ladder match on Sunday won't mean an immediate cash-in, as Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins has to run its course.
But for fans of Ambrose, Sunday will be littered with disappointment again as KO takes another step up the ladder, this time jumping over The Lunatic Fringe in the process.
