Canadian F1 Grand Prix 2016: Start Time, Drivers, TV Schedule and More

James DudkoJun 10, 2016

Lewis Hamilton will look to parlay his impressive practice times into a fifth career win at Formula One's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on Sunday.

There'll also be plenty of focus on Hamilton's championship battle with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, while Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo will look to bounce back from disappointment in Monaco.

First, though, must come the qualifying sessions to establish who will own pole position on the tricky Gilles Villeneuve circuit.

Despite cruelly missing out on victory at the Monaco Grand Prix last time out, Ricciardo is starting to put the pressure on Rosberg and Hamilton at the top.

As noted to Peter Higham of Motor Sport magazine: "Despite [Ricciardo's] disappointment two weeks ago, he is now 40 points behind Nico Rosberg in the championship—having closed the gap by 24 in the last two races. Rosberg has scored just six points in that time—his worst haul from successive races since 2013."

Rosberg also knows how close reigning champion Hamilton is behind him in the standings, 24 points to be exact, after the Englishman won in Monaco.

In Montreal, Hamilton set the pace in the second practice, with Rosberg trailing. Formula One Twitter showed the gap Hamilton managed to create on Friday:

After practice, Hamilton told Mercedes how happy he is to be in familiar surroundings:

Hamilton's knowledge of a tough circuit could prove crucial in Montreal. Torro Rosso's Carlos Sainz told his team's website about some of the challenges this course presents to drivers:

"

The start/finish straight in Canada is always very slippery. We also run with very low downforce, which means you're always going to struggle when braking and fight the steering wheel quite a lot. Turns 1 and 2 are one of the many chicanes that we have at this track, with the second corner being very, very slow.

"

Having to vary speeds is one thing, but drivers need their cars to be powerful enough to handle the long series of subtle turns in Montreal. For some, the trick will involve some tinkering with the engine.

It's a policy McLaren have already adopted, thanks to some new technology from Honda, according to James Galloway of Sky Sports.

He described the new turbochargers that will be present in McLaren cars for the race in Canada, with Honda saying the upgrades will bolster the "harvesting efficiency of the hybrid engine, rather than boosting power."

Yet Galloway also raised reasonable concerns about how McLaren's cars will navigate a circuit that demands "more of an emphasis on horsepower."

As Autosport pointed out, though, things haven't exactly run smoothly for McLaren during the practice simulations, despite the mechanical alterations:

Even with the adjustments to their cars, it's tough to believe McLaren drivers Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso will be able to keep pace with Rosberg, Hamilton and Ricciardo.

The latter is on a charge up the drivers' standings, but he is uncertain Red Bull can really help him overhaul Mercedes, per Sky Sports. Yet Ricciardo may not be solely reliant on his car to beat the Silver Arrows pair.

Instead, he could get a boost from the weather, with rain having already fallen in Montreal, according to Daniel Johnson of the Daily Telegraph.

Ricciardo will likely need some type of edge to stop Hamilton from claiming a fifth win in Canada, with Rosberg also among the favourites to claim the top step of the podium. Without one, the world champion's dominance might be the only thing assured in an otherwise notoriously unpredictable race.
