WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from June 9

Erik BeastonJun 10, 2016

Chris Jericho may have suffered a painful defeat at the hands of Dean Ambrose in an Asylum match at Extreme Rules, but Thursday night on SmackDown, he avenged the loss and, in the process, earned himself "biggest winner" status for the June 9 episode.

Jericho defeated The Lunatic Fringe in the main event, pinning him after a Codebreaker. Say what you will about a basic singles match proceeding what was supposed to be the culmination of their months-long feud, but it was at least built throughout the night, placing greater emphasis on what was otherwise a fairly routine SmackDown main event.

WWE Creative has done a relatively convincing job of portraying Jericho as a favorite to leave Las Vegas on June 19 with the Money in the Bank briefcase, which would be the first time the originator of the bout has actually emerged victorious.

A clean win over Ambrose was necessary because, for a moment, it felt like Jericho had become the new Kevin Owens, a worthy lead villain unable to overcome The Lunatic Fringe in any of their high-profile matches.

With Jericho's win, he suddenly finds himself a credible contender to the briefcase rather than a washed-up heel in dad jeans who has not quite figured out that time has passed him by. WWE Creative made that possible and helped Y2J have one of his strongest nights in quite some time.

It would behoove the creative team to take that same approach with Alberto Del Rio, who continuously looks like the odd man out in the upcoming ladder match.

Winners: Tag Teams

The tag team division in WWE has not been as hot as it is now in quite some time, with defined acts and compelling performers. Enzo Amore and Big Cass are incredibly over, as are champions and division centerpieces The New Day. The Vaudevillains may have been stripped of their credibility with a quick defeat at Extreme Rules, but they are still a quality team between the ropes.

Then there is The Club. With AJ Styles by their side and an ongoing rivalry with John Cena, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson have helped shine a spotlight on the tag team roster and are currently the favorites to leave Money in the Bank with the titles.

Before they could end Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods' historic run, they batted Amore and Cass to kick off this week's show. The match was advancing just fine before The Vaudevillains hit the ring, followed by the champions. A huge brawl broke out, generating a loud reaction from fans, none of whom ever get tired of the cliched donnybrook.

The teams were involved in the coveted opening slot, the first feud highlighted on Thursday's show. Usually reserved for main event stars or the heavyweight champion of the world, their placement there suggests Vince McMahon and WWE Creative believe the feud is hot enough to take center stage.

Thus far, none of the talent involved have let them down.

With just over a week until Money in the Bank, it will be interesting to see if the four teams enjoy an expanded role on Raw Monday night or if this week was one-and-done.

Loser: Titus O'Neil

Is it possible for any one competitor to look more like a lame-duck contender than Titus O'Neil does right now?

His feud with Rusev over the United States Championship came from out of nowhere; he has done nothing to suggest he deserves the title opportunity, and fans aren't buying into him as a competitor who can dethrone The Bulgarian Brute.

So little interest has been drummed up in regard to O'Neil as the No. 1 contender that WWE Creative reverted to some cheap heat in the form of the late Muhammad Ali to get audiences to even remotely express any sort of emotion in the match.

While he is a talented big man between the ropes and a great ambassador for the company outside of them, O'Neil has been failed miserably by WWE Creative in this instance, and the result will be a lackluster feud between two of the better heavyweights on the roster.

Winner: Baron Corbin

While The Lone Wolf may have unfinished business with Dolph Ziggler that probably should have wrapped up a long time ago, Corbin did tear through Kalisto Thursday night, defeating the former United States champion in convincing fashion.

If WWE Creative plays its cards right, it could catapult Corbin into the discussion for a U.S. title shot in the near future based solely off his dominating victory over the masked luchador.

Corbin is one of the young stars who has made the most of every opportunity he has received since his arrival on Raw and SmackDown, delivering strong performances against the aforementioned Ziggler all while maintaining that star aura that has surrounded him since the first time he stepped through the curtain in NXT.

The nonsense with Ziggler may have stretched on longer than it should have at this point, but big things are still in store for Corbin, who figures to introduce many Superstars to End of Days before too long.
