WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from June 9
Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the results, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show, as well as make a few predictions for future events.
With just over a week to go until Money in the Bank airs on June 19, WWE is trying to wrap up all the big storylines and fill the rest of the card.
We were originally supposed to get seven participants in this year's big ladder match, but we have only heard about six so far. Perhaps the last slot is being saved for a big return from Randy Orton or Bray Wyatt.
As for this week's SmackDown, most of the attention was paid to the Money in the Bank match and the midcard feuds, with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins skipping the show for the second straight week.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on Thursday's show.
The Club vs. Enzo and Cass
1 of 6WWE has been delivering more first-time matches in recent months than we saw in the entirety of 2015, and this was one of them.
The Club kicked off the show with a promo, but it was quickly interrupted by Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady, who did their usual amazing job of verbally assaulting their opponents.
For some reason, AJ Styles didn't stick around to support Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows during the match that followed. The New Day sat with the commentary team, and The Vaudevillains watched from the stage.
Amore took a lot of punishment before making the hot tag to Big Cass, which is usually how their matches go. All four men put on great performances, but in the end, a huge brawl with all four teams led to the ref calling for the bell.
This segment showed just how far the tag team division has come in the past year. These tag teams are all so different, and there is no doubt they will have a great match at Money in the Bank.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Enzo and Cass are the perfect examples of why the current developmental system works. Enzo had no prior wrestling experience before signing with WWE, and Big Cass had less than a year, and they are now one of the most entertaining acts in the entire company.
- I'm still waiting for someone to make a Festus joke. If anyone was going to do it, I thought it would be Amore.
- The New Day is usually awesome, but its commentary during the match was distracting.
- If Hooters didn't pay for a plug, the company got a lot of free advertising in this segment.
- Some of the kicks Anderson hit on Amore looked brutal, especially the one that knocked Amore out of the ring when he was trying to make a tag.
- The "John Cena" chant was surprising. Do you think WWE piped it in through the speakers or were the fans actually chanting for him?
Kevin Owens and Alberto Del Rio vs. Cesaro and Sami Zayn
2 of 6WWE may have jumped the gun on revealing all six competitors for the Money in the Bank match the week following Extreme Rules because we have seen this same tag bout a few times.
There's no denying that Alberto Del Rio, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Cesaro can put on a good show for the fans, but seeing them compete so often is getting repetitive.
It's hard for them to create a unique match every time they wrestle, but the way this one ended was a nice change. Owens ditched his partner halfway through, and Zayn ended up chasing him to the back.
Cesaro and Del Rio worked well together until Zayn and Owens fought their way back to the ring. KO ended up fighting Del Rio, making it so Zayn and Cesaro were the only two who didn't go after each other.
Once all the craziness died down, Owens got the pin on Cesaro to pick up the win. Thankfully, repetitiveness couldn't stop these guys from delivering a great performance.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- How many times does Owens have to screw over a partner before people realize they shouldn't team with him?
- Del Rio should bring back the gimmick where he drives a different car into the arena every week, but more importantly, he should get Ricardo Rodriguez to be his personal ring announcer again.
- If Owens isn't fighting for a top title by the end of the year, something is seriously wrong with the creative team.
Becky Lynch vs. Dana Brooke
3 of 6Natalya accompanied Becky Lynch to the ring to take on Dana Brooke, who had Charlotte in her corner for support. Neither of the women in this match are competing for the title, but they have been woven into this storyline well.
Whenever The Lass Kicker is involved in a match, you know things are going to get physical. She seems to have an extra gear nobody else has, and it makes her a lot of fun to watch.
Charlotte and Natalya ended up fighting, so the ref booted them from ringside. Not long after, Lynch forced Brooke to tap out to the Dis-arm-her.
The only thing wrong with this bout was its length. It should have lasted longer. Other than that, it was a solid outing from two women with bright futures in the division.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- Dana Brooke has to be one of the strongest women in the company. It's weird how she isn't booked to look like more of a powerhouse.
- Lynch should be the one challenging Charlotte for the Women's Championship. She is too good to be left out of the title scene.
- At least the crowd didn't chant "We want Sasha!" during this one.
Baron Corbin vs. Kalisto
4 of 6The Lone Wolf took on The Lucha Dragon while Dolph Ziggler sat with the commentary team to remind everyone he is in a feud with Baron Corbin.
Kalisto used his speed to get in some early offense, but he wasn't able to overcome Corbin's power and size advantage.
This was more about Ziggler and Corbin than it was about the action in the ring, and the match suffered a bit because of it. Kalisto is always fun to watch, so there were some exciting moments, but Corbin took him out to pick up a quick win.
Grade: C
Notes and Highlights
- Why wouldn't WWE put Corbin in the Money in the Bank match? Even if he wouldn't win, competing for a title shot is still a big deal for someone who has only been on the main roster for a few months.
- It looks like Kalisto's singles push is officially over. Why he and Sin Cara haven't been put back into the tag title hunt is a mystery.
- Corbin nearly launched Kalisto into the crowd from the apron.
- It's nice to see WWE using the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal trophy during Corbin's matches. It gives the award more credibility.
Backstage Segments
5 of 6Two segments took place that will lead to additional matches at Money in the Bank. The first one saw Rusev deliver a promo that was interrupted by Titus O'Neil.
Seeing O'Neil finally get the singles push he should have had a few years ago is a good sign. With all the new talent coming up from NXT, it would have been easy for him to get lost in the shuffle.
It almost feels like this is to compensate him for the ridiculous suspension he received for lightly touching Vince McMahon's arm during Daniel Bryan's retirement speech.
Rusev and O'Neil won't put on a technical clinic, but their power and athleticism will still allow them to have a great match for the U.S. title.
The second segment dealt with the mini-feud developing between Sheamus and Apollo Crews. Sheamus mocked Crews backstage until the former NXT standout punched him in the face to shut him up.
It's about time Crews was put into a real storyline. He was called up with no plan in place, and it killed all the momentum he built up in NXT.
Even if these two fight on the Money in the Bank pre-show, it will still be a step in the right direction.
These segments won't get grades because they were so short, but they deserved to be mentioned because they actually advanced storylines for two Superstars who have been underused.
Chris Jericho vs. Dean Ambrose
6 of 6Just like the tag match featuring the other four Money in the Bank participants earlier in the show, we have seen Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho face each other enough to last a long time.
It would have been nice to see WWE switch things up and have Cesaro or Zayn face Y2J instead, but as always, Ambrose and Jericho put on a solid performance.
Ambrose looked a little more unhinged than usual, which is actually how he should be acting all the time if he wants people to think he is a lunatic.
We have seen better from these two, but they still ended up having one of the best matches of the night. After a hard-fought contest, Jericho picked up what was basically a clean win with a Codebreaker.
Y2J tried to use a ladder after the match was over, but Ambrose turned the tables and got the last laugh with a diving elbow off the ladder to end the show.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- Is it just me or does it look like Jericho is trying to grow a moustache?
- I have been watching wrestling for a long time, and Mauro Ranallo uses wrestling terms I have never heard before on a regular basis. That's why he is so good at his job.
- The usual "Final Thoughts and Predictions" slide will only be used for the final SmackDown before a pay-per-view going forward, so it will return next week.
