Chelsea Transfer News: Latest on Kwadwo Asamoah Amid Cesar Azpilicueta Rumours

Rory MarsdenJun 8, 2016

Juventus midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah is reportedly "keen on a reunion" with incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte amid news that Athletic Bilbao remain very interested in signing Blues full-back Cesar Azpilicueta.

Conte was in charge at the Old Lady when Asamoah moved to Juve in 2012, and the Italian manager could seemingly be reunited with the 27-year-old as Chelsea are prepared to spend £15 million on him, according to Darren Lewis in the Mirror.

His role at Juve has become less vital since Conte departed. He has also struggled with injury, but Asamoah is now a four-time Serie A winner and could be a very useful addition at Chelsea.

Per Bleacher Report's Dean Jones, he can play as a central midfielder, a left-winger and left wing-back, versatility that would be very useful for Conte:

It would also likely be very useful for the current Italy boss to have a player at his new club who is already used to his style, as Conte is set to make significant tactical changes at Stamford Bridge.

At £15 million, Ghanaian Asamoah would be a good value purchase in what is set to be a busy summer for Chelsea as they look to bounce back following a terrible 2015-16 campaign.

Additions are desperately needed in the Chelsea engine room after central midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic endured a major dip in form last term—the pair were both brilliant in the Blues' 2014-15 title-winning season.

Asamoah could be very useful in the middle of the park as he has an excellent range of passing and likes to drive forward at opposition defences.

He could also be a major asset as cover on the left side of defence, an area Chelsea may be very short in if Athletic are successful in their pursuit of Spaniard Azpilicueta.

Bilbao are reportedly set to "test [Chelsea's] resolve" over Azpilicueta this summer but the Blues want to keep him given that he is able to play in either full-back role—and has been one of their top-performing players over the last two seasons—per Lewis.

It would surely be foolish of Chelsea to move on the 26-year-old, as he was one of few bright sparks in the Blues' very poor defence last term.

With Conte potentially set to play three at the back next season, Azpilicueta may have to adapt his style of play somewhat.

But he has consistently been impressive during his time at Chelsea and has the talent to adjust, thus he is a player the west Londoners should keep hold of no matter who else they bring in.
