WWE SmackDown Spoilers: Complete Results and Analysis for June 9

Erik BeastonJun 7, 2016

On a night in which The Club kicked things off, it was the six Superstars embroiled in the build to Money in the Bank who took center stage at Tuesday night's SmackDown tapings and thanks to our friends at WrestlingInc.com, we have all of the spoilers for this week's broadcast.

Already announced on Raw was the latest bout in the rivalry between Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho. On the heels of a violent Asylum match that saw Y2J thrown back-first into thousands of thumbtacks, the first Undisputed champion in WWE history looked to avenge his loss in the bout by beating The Lunatic Fringe.

Would he succeed?

The remaining four Superstars were involved in tag team action that saw the feud between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn overshadow the match itself.

Speaking of avenging losses, Becky Lynch looked to pay back Dana Brooke for two embarrassing losses that occurred shortly after the NXT star's arrival. Could the Irish-born Lass Kicker achieve a much-needed victory, or would Brooke utilize her partnership with Charlotte to spur her to victory?

With AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson in the house and a huge Fatal 4-Way match for the WWE World Tag Team Championships upcoming at Money in the Bank, which dynamic duos would find themselves on the receiving end of The Club's wrath?

Results

  • The Club kicked the show off, discussing the events of Monday night. Enzo Amore and Colin "Big Cass" Cassady interrupted, referred to the heels as "SAWFT" and set up the night's opening match. Tag team champions The New Day joined Mauro Ranallo, Jerry Lawler and Byron Saxton on commentary.
  • Amore and Big Cass vs. The Club's Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows ended in a double disqualification when The Vaudevillains and The New Day interfered.
  • Titus O'Neil, who took exception to the United States champion disgracing the memory of Muhammad Ali, interrupted Rusev's backstage interview. He vowed to beat The Bulgarian Brute and take the title at Money in the Bank.
  • Kevin Owens and Alberto Del Rio defeated Sami Zayn and Cesaro. Midway through the match, Owens and Zayn renewed their rivalry, brawling to the backstage area. When Owens emerged, he did not hesitate to attack his own partner before pinning The Swiss Superstar for the win.
  • Becky Lynch defeated Dana Brooke via submission with The Disarmer.
  • Bob Backlund continued his quest to make Darren Young great again with a pre-taped vignette.
  • Baron Corbin defeated former United States champion Kalisto, with Dolph Ziggler watching on from the commentary position—the feud between him and The Lone Wolf seemingly destined to go on for eternity.
  • Apollo Crews gained a measure of revenge from a few weeks back, attacking Sheamus backstage after finding himself the butt of The Celtic Warrior's joke.
  • Jericho defeated Ambrose following his trademark Codebreaker. After the match, in the most predictable angle imaginable, The Lunatic Fringe regained his heat by attacking Y2J with a ladder to end the show.

Analysis

SmackDown has become home to WWE's secondary programs—a place where competitors like Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Cesaro can thrive and star. This week, brand MVP Ambrose competed in the main event, losing to Jericho. While that may be a poor decision on the surface, Y2J was in dire need of a win to regain momentum. He got it, leaving Zayn and Alberto Del Rio as the two Superstars who are in much need of credibility.

The Club feels wasted in a tag team feud, particularly Styles, who is given very little to do this week. While it is nice to see WWE placing emphasis on the division, the only realistic options to leave with the gold are current champions The New Day or Anderson and Gallows, thus rendering two of the four teams involved in the June 19 bout useless.

Becky Lynch scoring a win is a nice change of pace, but the ongoing feud pitting her and Natalya against Charlotte and Dana Brooke is as one-dimensional and uninteresting as any women's program since last summer.

One look at the results from this week's broadcast reveals a show that is hardly fresh and exciting, but likely features enough quality wrestling, from some of WWE's bright young faces, to warrant tuning in. Do not go out of your way to watch, but at the same time, tune in if the opportunity presents itself.

If nothing else, SmackDown is typically the more fluid and lucid program in the WWE Universe.
