Real Madrid Transfer News: Robert Lewandowski, David Alaba Blow Dealt by Bayern

Rory MarsdenJun 7, 2016

Real Madrid have been dealt a major blow in their reported pursuit of Bayern Munich duo David Alaba and Robert Lewandowski after the German club’s executive director, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, said no players would leave this summer "against our will."

Per AS's Mario de la Riva, Polish striker Lewandowski and Austrian defender Alaba are "top summer targets" for Real. But it is highly unlikely Los Blancos will be able to launch successful bids for the pair after Rummenigge said in an interview that will be released Wednesday that Bayern would not be selling, per Bild (via De La Riva): "The door’s closed. No player will leave Bayern against our will. We’ve got a good relationship with [Real] as we do with Barcelona. But since 2008 it’s been known around Europe that we don’t sell players that we don’t want to sell."

Real President Florentino Perez was previously reported to be prepared to sell Cristiano Ronaldo, which would make space for Lewandowski to come in, per Sport.

The Pole is clearly a key target for Los Blancos, which is no great surprise, after he returned 30 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances in Bayern's triumphant 2015-16 campaign, per WhoScored.com.

Given that he is 27 and Ronaldo is now 31, it may even make long-term sense for Real to swap in Lewandowski for the Portuguese superstar.

However, given that Ronaldo enjoyed another superlative season in 2015-16 and inspired his side to UEFA Champions League glory, it seems highly unlikely he will be leaving the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

Lewandowski would surely be reluctant to join a side in which he would have to compete with Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema for a starting spot, and Rummenigge's comments have merely confirmed the inevitable—he will not be sold.

It is not such a major blow, though, given the strength of Real's attack. But missing out on Alaba is a concern, as Real's defence can be inconsistent.

The 23-year-old Alaba would bring some more youthful verve to a centre-back region still overreliant on Pepe and Sergio Ramos, while his ability to also play at left-back could be valuable, as Real are lacking cover in the area, per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe:

It seems clear, though, that Perez and manager Zinedine Zidane will have to look away from Bayern to strengthen their squad in the summer, as Alaba and Lewandowski are undoubtedly two of the German champions' key players, and as Rummenigge said, "the door's closed."
