Arsenal Transfer News: Moussa Sissoko Reveals Gunners Desire Amid Latest Rumours

Rory MarsdenJun 7, 2016

Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko has revealed he hopes to be playing for Arsenal "soon" following the Magpies' recent relegation from the Premier League.

Get French Football relayed the comments from the 26-year-old in which he admitted he wanted to join the north London club:

Sissoko has reportedly long been a target of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's as he looks to add greater physicality to his squad, and he could cost up to £10 million, per the Mirror's Simon Bird.

Sissoko stated his desire to leave Newcastle this summer but said he wants to stay in England "in a club that plays Champions League football," per Foot Mercato (h/t Get French Football News). However, this limits his options to just Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester City.

With Arsenal having already reportedly shown interest in the versatile midfielder, the Emirates Stadium looks the obvious destination.

However, he is arguably not good enough to deserve a move to the Emirates. While he claimed to "have given everything for three years" at Newcastle, he was widely criticised for some poor displays last season and was at least part of the reason they were relegated, per football writer Chris Waugh:

He predominantly played on the right flank in the 2015-16 Premier League season, while sometimes filling the No. 10 role, and he scored once and provided seven assists in 37 appearances, per WhoScored.com.

Sissoko would provide Wenger with something different in attack as, unlike Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil et al, he is a significant physical presence going forward.

There are major questions, despite his own claims, as to whether he has the quality to play at UEFA Champions League level, per the Daily Post's Tom Davidson:

With Walcott having recently been assured of his future at Arsenal in a right-flank role, per Matt Law in the Telegraph, there is also no immediate need for Wenger to add a new attacking player who is not going to guarantee consistently good performances.

The Gunners have already signed Granit Xhaka to bolster the midfield and have now lodged a bid for Leicester City's Jamie Vardy, per Law.

Should Arsenal snap up the England striker, it will already have been a more successful summer transfer window than 2015—when only Petr Cech was signed—and Sissoko may be seen as an unnecessary addition by the famously frugal Wenger.
