Zieler was once a youth player at Manchester United, where he played with fellow Red Devils alumni Danny Drinkwater, Danny Simpson, Ritchie De Laet and Matty James.
Per the club's official website, the 27-year-old revealed his delight at the move after enduring relegation with Hannover 96:
"It feels great coming to Leicester and joining the Club after they’ve had such a great season—it’s really nice to be part of the Club now.
I’ve been shown around the training ground and it looks very good and I’ve been to the stadium—I heard about the great atmosphere and the great fans, so my first impression is very good.
"
According to Alex Richards of the Mirror, the German, who was part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, arrives on a £3 million fee after the Foxes met his release clause.
Richards and the Column's George Curtis believes it's an astute acquisition for the Premier League champions:
Football journalist Kristof Terreur noted he was one of two goalkeepers Leicester were considering:
They may have chosen wisely if his numbers are anything to go by, per OptaFranz, Squawka Football and WhoScored.com:
Miles Jacobsen, director of computer game series Football Manager and columnist for the Mirror, saw another bonus for the Foxes in snapping up Zieler as they prepare to take part in the UEFA Champions League next season:
Indeed, Zieler's arrival gives Kasper Schmeichel valuable competition for the No. 1 spot and affords manager Claudio Ranieri the option of deploying a cup-and-European 'keeper in the manner Barcelona do with Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, should he so wish.
At the very least, with an extra set of games to deal with next season, having a strong alternative to Schmeichel will come in handy to give the Dane a rest or replace him if he gets injured.
The Foxes have an excellent harmony in their squad—one Ranieri must be careful to preserve particularly as players leave and arrive during the transfer window—but Zieler is a strong start to their summer business, and in moving early for him, they've already dealt with one of the issues they needed to address.
