WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from June 2
Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the results, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show, as well as make a few predictions for future events.
Thursday's show spent a lot of time advancing storylines from Monday's Raw, with The Club and The New Day taking center stage in the opening and closing segments.
Most of the main event talent was absent , so the midcard, women's and tag team divisions got a lot of attention.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on the latest edition of SmackDown.
Opening Segment
1 of 7SmackDown opened with The New Day heading to the ring for a promo. They did their usual shtick until The Club came out on the stage.
AJ Styles was in full heel mode during this segment, which was a little strange after seeing him play the valiant babyface for the past few months.
Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson made it clear they were going after the tag titles, but as soon as Styles came out, the focus shifted to him and Kofi Kingston.
Styles called Kingston a joke, and Kofi mentioned how long it took AJ to get to WWE, which made this segment feel more personal and injected a bit of realism.
Having fresh feuds such as this should be what the so-called new era is all about, and if getting Styles vs. Kingston on SmackDown is the result, everyone should be excited.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- How do you think Xavier Woods, Kingston and Big E decide who is going to wear the tag team belts each night? Is there a set rotation, or do they play rock-paper-scissors?
- Gallows should be the strong, silent type and let Anderson do all the talking.
- I'm still waiting for someone to make a joke about Jesse and Festus or The Straight Edge Society.
Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte
2 of 7The first match of the night saw Becky Lynch battle Charlotte, but Dana Brooke accompanied the women's champion, so Lynch was immediately at a disadvantage.
Charlotte controlled the first half of the contest, but Lynch made a comeback after the commercial break. They put on a good show, but we have seen better from both women.
Brooke got involved and ended up causing a disqualification after Lynch locked in the DisArmHer. Natalya came out and assisted The Lass Kicker in beating down the heels.
Taking Ric Flair out of the equation has put all of the attention back on the women, which is how it should be in these storylines.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- Adding smoke to Lynch's entrance was a good decision. It fits her character and is probably much cheaper than using pyro.
- You have to wonder whether WWE forced Lynch to changer the color of her hair because it was getting too close to the color of Eva Marie's hair?
- Dean Ambrose, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and Alberto Del Rio had a funny confrontation backstage that included some more jokes about Canada from The Lunatic Fringe.
The Dudley Boyz vs. Golden Truth
3 of 7Another chapter in the tragic storyline involving R-Truth and Goldust unfolded in this match when they took a loss to Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley.
Fandango and Tyler Breeze watched from ringside as the former ECW mainstays battle Golden Truth in a textbook tag match.
The crowd didn't seem to care about this contest, which negatively affected how it came across on television. There were moments when WWE clearly edited in crowd reactions, which made it even more obvious nobody cared.
The saddest thing about all this is the four men in the match deserve better. WWE took forever to put Goldust and Truth together, and they have ended up having a losing streak.
The match itself wasn't bad, but nothing about it was memorable.
Grade: C-
Notes and Highlights
- Does WWE really expect people to sing along just because Karaoke lyrics appear on the screen while Truth is singing his entrance music? To make matters worse, someone put in the word "addition" when it should have been "edition" on the screen.
- Breeze and Fandango make a much better team than Goldust and R-Truth. They have more chemistry, and their gimmicks actually work well together.
- Even Mauro Ranallo's energetic commentary couldn't save this match.
Sami Zayn and Dean Ambrose vs. Alberto Del Rio and Kevin Owens
4 of 7Owens attacked Zayn from behind as soon as the bell rang to get things going. Zayn took most of the punishment during the first half of the match, and Ambrose came in and cleaned house after a hot tag.
Owens spent a lot of time taunting Zayn, even when Ambrose was the legal man. The way those two play off each other is always entertaining.
A miscommunication led to Del Rio accidentally kicking Owens off the apron, allowing Zayn to hit a massive Helluva Kick on the Mexican Aristocrat for the win.
As always, these four men put on a great show. Their styles are all so different, but they found a way to make them work well together.
In a fit of rage, Owens grabbed a ladder from under the ring and tried to take down the Money in the Bank briefcase. Cesaro ran down to the ring and took him out with a springboard uppercut before grabbing the case for himself, all while wearing a suit and sunglasses.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Why would Jerry Lawler think "fracas" was a Canadian word? Has he gone over 60 years without hearing it used in conversation?
- Zayn sold Del Rio's Backstabber better than anyone else ever has.
- Owens' anger is more believable than anyone else's. He could be a good actor if someone decided to put him in a movie.
Rusev vs. Jack Swagger
5 of 7An old feud renewed when Rusev took on Jack Swagger in a non-title match. Rusev defeated Swagger every time they faced each other in 2014, and this bout had the same ending.
It's great to see Swagger get some TV time, but he's like Zack Ryder at this point. If he appears, you know he is going to lose.
Rusev attacked him before the bell, which made it easier for him to defeat his former rival. Swagger put up a better fight than expected, so at least he didn't look like a total jobber.
Titus O'Neil made the save after Rusev refused to release Swagger from the Accolade, so it's pretty obvious who will be getting the next United States Championship match.
Grade: C
Notes and Highlights
- It seems like Rusev gets a little slimmer with each passing week.
- Rusev's dazed look after he takes a big bump always makes me laugh. He is better at selling than most people realize.
- Swagger should find another tag team partner. It's likely the only way he is going to get another push.
- Whatever happened to referees reversing decisions when someone doesn't release a submission?
AJ Styles vs. Kofi Kingston
6 of 7When you put two versatile athletes such as Kingston and Styles in the ring together, you now it's going to be a fun main event.
They started off with a fast-paced exchange to show off how evenly matched they are, and they kept the momentum going all the way until the end.
Kingston is great as part of The New Day, but this match reminded everyone what a great singles competitor he is. Everything he does looks so smooth.
Once a fight broke out at ringside between everyone in both groups, it was clear Styles was going to get the win.
Grade: A-
Notes and Highlights
- Styles did a good job changing his style to incorporate more heel tactics.
- Gallows, Anderson, Woods and Big E were too distracting. This would have been much better had it just been Styles and Kingston fighting by themselves.
- The SOS Kofi hit on Styles might've been the best one he has ever performed.
Final Thoughts and Predictions
7 of 7With the exception of the tag team match between the Dudleys and Golden Truth, this was a good episode of SmackDown.
The most surprising thing was how John Cena, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins were completely left out of the show except for some video packages.
There's still a lot of work to do in order to fill the rest of the Money in the Bank card, but a few potential matches are obvious based on storylines.
All of this week's predictions will deal with bouts we could see added to the pay-per-view.
Predictions
- The New Day will defend the tag titles against Anderson and Gallows.
- Titus O'Neil will have his first shot at a singles title against Rusev for the United States Championship.
- The Miz will not defend the Intercontinental Championship because he is busy filming a movie.
- Becky Lynch will accompany Natalya for her women's title shot against Charlotte.
- Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady will battle The Dudley Boyz.
What did you think of this week's SmackDown?
