WWE Must Avoid Creating 2nd Women's Title After Raw and SmackDown Split

Tom ClarkMay 29, 2016

WWE is entering perhaps the most exciting time it's seen in years. Not only is the New Era taking off in terms of popularity, but now the brand split is also bringing new attention and speculation like never before. Fans want to know if the split is indeed best for business. They want to know which talents will land on what program.

But they also want to know how all of this will be handled. Much of the talk has focused on the men's championships, but fans can't forget about the Women's Championship.

Will WWE add a second title?

Charlotte is the champ right now, of course, and she's done a good job so far in the role of the division's primary heel. She can draw heat like no one else, she's an excellent athlete in the ring and she's in her prime.

More importantly, she adds value to the championship. The title is only as valuable as the talent holding it, and Charlotte is arguably the right person to hold it right now.

But what happens after the brand split? Charlotte's place as the top star in the women's division should not change; she's too good at what she does. But will a second women's champion join her at the top?

It's a discussion that's circulating among fans, but most of the focus has been on the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Will the company split the titles up again because Raw and SmackDown both deserve their own champions?

This is the problem with the Women's Championship.

If Charlotte is drafted exclusively to Raw, what happens to the women drafted to SmackDown? Will those women not have an opportunity to challenge Charlotte for the title? If this happens, the credibility that's been earned with the Women's Championship will be lessened.

Charlotte will be working the same opponents week after week, with no hope of ever changing it up and doing anything differently.

Suddenly, all of the work that's gone into getting her over will be for nothing. She will get stale, as there will be no one new to challenge her. This could be the fear WWE has when it comes to Roman Reigns' championship; why not bring a second world title in to alleviate that problem?

A second title would mean every performer in the women's division would have a chance.

But this cannot be the reason why a new belt is introduced. The women's title only recently saw its rebirth take place at WrestleMania 32. There is no need to dim the spotlight on that important moment less than two months later.

When the Divas Championship disappeared, so too did the stigma that was attached to it. No more were the women's division talents going to be viewed as eye candy, existing only to strike a pose as runway models.

The women of today's WWE are more apt to handle the grind of an active and competitive pro wrestling environment. This is no longer just about drawing fans because of physical appearance. This is about drawing fans because it's a credible division with highly skilled stars.

A second title would dilute the division, weaken the other championship and decrease the amount of fans who love what women's wrestling has become.

So instead of creating a second women's title, WWE should spotlight Charlotte as a traveling champion between both Raw and SmackDown. This is part of the discussion fans are having concerning the men's division, and that theory could work in this situation.

It would be an ironic twist, considering Charlotte's legendary father was a traveling champion himself.

Ric Flair was the top titleholder for the NWA, and he went from one territory to another, defending the belt against all challengers. The Nature Boy's appearances meant so much more because he wasn't always on every promotion's TV; fans had the chance to appreciate the champion that he was.

This could work for Charlotte as well. WWE's renewed interest in pushing women's wrestling to the forefront cannot and should not be ignored. The division deserves the respect that only the red and white championship brings, and any attempt to recreate that with a second championship would likely fail miserably.
