Donnie Nietes vs. Raul Garcia: Winner, Scorecard and Reaction

Tim DanielsMay 28, 2016

Donnie Nietes (38-1-4, 22 KOs) retained the WBO world light flyweight title with a dominant performance that forced Raul Garcia's (38-4-1, 23 KOs) corner to concede after the fifth round Saturday at the La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City, Philippines.

Nietes showed no fear of Garcia's offensive capabilities, as he completely overwhelmed the 33-year-old southpaw with a series of heavy shots starting in the second round. The challenger showed plenty of resilience to keep fighting, but it eventually became too one-sided to resume.

It's the ninth consecutive title defense for the 34-year-old veteran from the Philippines, who's held the belt for more than four years.

The win marked Nietes' first fight at the arena in his native Negros Occidental since winning the title against Garcia's twin brother, Ramon Garcia Hirales, in 2011. Michael Angelo S. Murillo of Business World Online noted the Filipino sensation was hoping to put on a show at Pinoy Pride 36.

"It's nice to be fighting back in Bacolod. I'm looking for a more convincing win this time around," Nietes said during the fight buildup.

After a slow-paced opening round, the champion came out firing in the second with a couple of combinations that did damage to the challenger. Garcia struggled to find a rhythm, firing wildly in an attempt to combat the power being thrown his way.

Nietes continued to ramp up the onslaught in the third round. He pushed forward with a relentless offensive attack, showing little concern about the Mexican's counterattacks, and it paid off with a pair of knockdowns to grab complete control of the match.

Rappler Sports pointed out it was unfamiliar territory for Garcia:

The champion showed no signs of slowing down over the next two rounds. He showcased terrific efficiency, attacking Garcia with shots to just about every part of his body. It left little opportunity for Rayito to mount a comeback.

He returned to his corner battered and bruised after the fifth round, and the decision was made to call off the fight before the start of the sixth.

Santino Honasan of ABS-CBN Sports provided the details:

Nietes has put together a string of impressive performances during his title reign, but this may have been the best of them all—a completely comprehensive victory over a legitimate challenger.

James Goyder of MMA Weekly had high praise for the longtime champion:

Looking ahead, Dennis Principe of PTV Sports reported Nietes is scheduled for a mandatory title defense against Moises Fuentes in September at the StubHub Center in California. The champion won their last meeting by ninth-round knockout after they fought to a draw in 2013.

Based on the way Nietes performed Saturday, it's hard to see anybody seriously testing him unless he decides to switch divisions to seek a new challenge.

Post-Fight Reaction

Ryan Songalia of Rappler noted Nietes came away pleased with the result after quickly gaining confidence in his ability to secure a stoppage early in the bout.

"Of course I am very happy because I was able to fulfill my promise to my countrymen," he said. "In the first round coach [Edmund Villamor] and I were looking whether I can handle Garcia's power. I was looking for the right timing so within three or four rounds I got to him. I said to myself 'I can knock him out.'"

Roy Luarca of the Philippine Daily Inquirer provided further reaction from the champion, who never felt much doubt concerning the result once the fight started.

"I knew I had him from the first round," Nietes said. "I found no need to hurry up as his body is already hurting."
