Zack Sabre Jr., Deonna Purrazzo and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News
Zack Sabre Jr.'s health and Deonna Purrazzo's future headline the week's WWE NXT news.
Word of Sabre suffering an injury had fans worried about whether he would be ready to go once the Cruiserweight Classic came about. The update on his condition will quell that worry. The British submission artist won't be sidelined for long.
As for Purrazzo, she is still not a full-time member of the developmental brand, but a recent interview provided a peek at her relationship with WWE.
In other stories, NXT added to its team of announcers, several potential prospects tried out at the WWE Performance Center and the next Takeover special looks to have its soundtrack sewn up.
Zack Sabre Jr. Update
1 of 5Early reports of Zack Sabre Jr.'s injury were vague, but details have since emerged. Sabre suffered a lesion on his right forearm during a match in Germany, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. He had busted the arm on a ring post.
SPLX Apparel (which sponsors Sabre) posted details of the injury on its website, and noted, "The wound is healing very well and he will be back in action against Kurt Angle for Revolution Pro on Sunday 12th June in York Hall."
That's well before he will compete in WWE's Cruiserweight Classic tournament. As one of the bigger names set for that event, Sabre's injury being a short-term one will have company officials quite happy.
WWE Hosts Tryout
2 of 5More potential prospects walked into the WWE Performance Center with eyes aplenty on them as another tryout session unfolded. WWE announced on its website last week, "Thirty-two athletes, with backgrounds spanning the NFL, NCAA wrestling, mixed martial arts and other sports, reported to the WWE Performance Center today for a tryout."
Among the most notable names to participate are former NFL players Demitrius Bronson and Junior Aumavae, as well as independent wrestlers Nathan Redwing and Ashley Urbanski.
This group of WWE hopefuls certainly has some size. There are two guys over the 300-pound mark, a 6'9" swimmer and Redwing, who weighs in at 290 pounds.
The search for talent continues, with WWE keeping its pool of potential Superstars diverse in terms of background. Everything from MMA to bikini competitions are represented in this crew.
Deonna Purrazzo on WWE NXT Tryout, Matches
3 of 5Deonna Purrazzo has wrestled for the developmental brand several times, but only as a free agent. From her conversation with Sean Ross Sapp of Wrestling Inc in a recent interview, it's clear that WWE is at least taking a long look at her.
Purrazzo said "I had my WWE tryout, so that's a conversation in itself. Nothing is set in stone. I'm happy doing what I'm doing, being a free agent, working for them when they need it and make a platform." She also mentioned that being asked to compete at a TV taping is a good sign.
Still, it's unclear whether she will be asked to sign a full-time deal. "I don't know what the future holds with them," she said, "But I know that they've been happy with what I've been able to do."
NXT Hires New Announcer
4 of 5
The shifting of NXT personnel continues. Shortly after news broke that WWE released Alex Reyes, as reported by Mike Johnson of PWInsider, the company added a new face.
On F4WOnline.com, Dave Meltzer reported, "WWE hired a new announcer named Austin Romero, who started on Friday working the NXT tour using the name Mike Rome."
He has begun working alongside Andrea D'Marco as a host of NXT live events. That's where Greg Hamilton started as well before moving to a role on TV.
PWInsider's Steven Fernandes added that Rome debuted at last Friday's show in Venice, Florida.
Other News, Notes
5 of 5Likely a byproduct of WWE and EVOLVE's growing relationship, the indy promotion's event was set up with fans of both companies in mind.
EVOLVE announced on its website that the promotion will be run a matinee show in Queens, New York, on Saturday, July 16. PWInsider's Mike Johnson noted, "WWE will be running Madison Square Garden that evening, so the show is being booked with the idea of ending with enough time for fans to make a double shot to the MSG event."
And when Finn Balor takes on Samoa Joe at the NXT TakeOver special in June, a Japanese band will help set the scene. Triple H tweeted that BABYMETAL and A Day To Remember will be featured at NXT TakeOver.
They will likely provide the event's theme songs. BABYMETAL has gained some notoriety in the U.S. after appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this year.
