WWE Raw Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from May 23

Erik BeastonMay 24, 2016

For her entire main-roster career, Charlotte has been defined by her relationship with father Ric Flair, but on Monday night she altered the course of her character by dismissing The Nature Boy and in the process becoming the biggest winner from the May 23 episode of Raw.

It was not a flawless night of work from the current women's champion. Early on it looked as though she may stumble, feeding into the crowd's chants of "What?" and causing them to intensify. She recovered, though, and went on to cut one of her finest promos to date, ripping her Hall of Fame father apart on the mic and drawing some of the biggest heat of the night.

She was confident and strong on the microphone, loud and obnoxious even as she generated jeers from the thousands in Baltimore. It was a glorious promo that saw the champion berate her father as if he was some commoner and in the process strengthen her on-screen persona in ways that pay-per-view wins and championship triumphs never could.

Charlotte drove her father to tears, humiliating him and forcing him from her ring, bringing an end to their pairing and announcing to the wrestling world that she is her own woman. That will benefit her exponentially going forward while reaffirming that the spotlight of women's wrestling in WWE should be on the competitors themselves and not the all-time greats at ringside.

The second-generation Superstar was not the only big winner from this week's show, which featured five Money in the Bank qualifying matches, the return of Enzo Amore and the announcement from Shane McMahon that Seth Rollins will challenge Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the June 19 PPV.

Unfortunately, and for one star in particular, there were also those Superstars who obviously failed to make an impact on Monday's broadcast for one reason or another.

Loser: Rusev

The Bulgarian Brute saw his push rejuvenated Sunday night via his United States Championship victory over Kalisto. Instead of following up on that huge win, though, WWE Creative opted to keep Rusev off television Monday night, treating his win as if it was essentially meaningless.

Sure, he will defend against Kalisto in a rematch on SmackDown, but a high-profile match on what is clearly the No. 2 show in WWE is little compensation.

Rusev and Lana were outstanding Sunday night during the pay-per-view Kickoff Show, displaying more charisma than ever before. They were funny, engaging and interesting in a way that so many others earning significantly more screen time are not.

WWE Creative's failure to spotlight the act appropriately on Monday night was a major disappointment.

Winner: Kevin Owens

The Prizefighter of WWE reminded fans that he can beat any Superstar at any time Monday night when he pinned AJ Styles cleanly in the center of the ring following his trademark Pop-Up Powerbomb.

On the heels of an extraordinary Fatal 4-Way match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at Extreme Rules, Owens continued to gain momentum. Now one of the favorites to emerge from the Money in the Bank match on June 19 with the briefcase, Owens figures to have a monumental second half of 2016.

If he can continue netting wins over elite performers like AJ Styles and Sami Zayn, both he and the WWE product will be better for it.

Winner: Sami Zayn

Speaking of Zayn, The Underdog From The Underground picked up one of the biggest wins of his main-roster career Monday night as he exploded across the ring with his Helluva Kick and defeated former WWE champion Sheamus cleanly to advance to the Money in the Bank match.

Though the win was described as a major upset, it is yet another achievement on Zayn's great recent run. His first WrestleMania appearance, a Match of the Year contender against Shinsuke Nakamura at TakeOver: Dallas and two straight pay-per-view show-stealing performances have the Montreal native riding a wave of momentum here in 2016.

Can he channel it into a win at Money in the Bank? Only time will tell, but expect to see him throw caution to the wind in hopes of leaving the WWE Universe buzzing about his work.

Losers: Sheamus and Apollo Crews

Nothing says, "Get excited about this feud" like having both Sheamus and Apollo Crews lose high-profile matches on the night that their program kicks off.

Sure, it was necessitated by The Celtic Warrior's defeat at the hands of Zayn and his subsequent backstage attack of Crews, and it made sense that the NXT export lost his match to Chris Jericho when he was less than 100 percent, but there had to have been a better way to go about bringing them together.

The use of Sheamus remains puzzling, in that he is one of the stars of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. WWE typically loves to tout the mainstream appearances of its talent, then push those Superstars in prominent roles on television. That has not been the case with Sheamus, who has been as irrelevant as any other star on the show.

As for Crews, he has been underutilized since his call-up. A feud with The Social Outcasts netted him little in the way of momentum, and since wrapping that program up, he has been relegated to secondary shows like Superstars and Main Event.

A rivalry between the two can be mutually beneficial, but it is difficult to come up with a worse way to generate a vendetta between two stars than by telling the fans that they are losers right out of the gate.
