WWE Extreme Rules 2016 Results: Twitter Reacts to Top Stars, Moments and More

Erik BeastonMay 22, 2016

WWE presented its most extreme pay-per-view of the year Sunday night, Extreme Rules, exclusively on its revolutionary network, and fans across the globe chimed in on the show's biggest matches, moments and Superstars on Twitter.

The WWE World Heavyweight Championship was up for grabs as Roman Reigns defended against AJ Styles in the event's namesake match and, more importantly, one of the most anticipated bouts of 2016. Which Superstar escaped Newark, New Jersey, with the victory, and what did the legions of wrestling fans on the social media juggernaut have to say about it?

With an undercard including Chris Jericho vs. Dean Ambrose, Charlotte vs. Natalya and a Fatal 4-Way match for the Intercontinental Championship, the show featured one of the strongest lineups in recent memory.

What had fans buzzing as WWE enters the summer months? Let's take a look.

Fatal 4-Way of Awesomeness

The Miz successfully defended his WWE Intercontinental Championship over Cesaro, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in the first legitimate Match of the Year candidate of 2016. The reaction of the Twitterverse spoke volumes about its greatness:

The likelihood that anything else on the show was going to approach the quality of the IC title match was low. Fans across Twitter had every right to praise the bout. An action-packed contest that built until the clever finish that put heat on Miz and kept alive the program between Zayn and Owens, it was as close to perfection as Fatal 4-Way matches get in WWE.

An Asylum of Apathy

It is fitting that the product of an underwhelming feud between Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho was a match that was met with a great deal of negativity across Twitter Sunday night. Bleacher Report's Alfred Konuwa and Ryan Dilbert, our friends at WrestlingInc.com and Total Wrestling Magazine all made their feelings known:

B/R alumnus and Fighting Spirit Magazine's David Bixenspan questioned whether presumed producer Arn Anderson and his layout of the match was the real problem:

The introduction of thumbtacks piqued interest but failed to rescue the contest from sub-mediocrity:

The thumbtack spot may have popped the crowd, but it felt more like a desperate attempt by the Superstars to make up for what was a ridiculously misguided attempt at a major feud blow-off. It was slow, plodding and even boring at spots, and no dip into Mick Foley's bag of tricks (or tacks) changed that.

Wait...What?!

Dana Brooke provided a distraction that allowed Charlotte to seize control of her contest with Natalya and ultimately her WWE Women's Championship in Sunday's Submission match. A question poised by WWE's official Twitter account proved to be one several fans and analysts had a difficult time answering:

B/R's Mike Chiari was vocal about his dislike for the finish while The Fan's Podcast was even more unabashed in its disdain for the conclusion of the bout:

For a match that featured heavily in the show-closing segment of Monday Night Raw, this was a massive disappointment that never felt nearly as prestigious as it should have been. Add in the nonsensical twist at the end of the match, which felt more like a swerve for swerve's sake, and you have a mess that failed to live up to the extraordinary performances by Natalya and Charlotte from their previous encounters.

A Phenomenal Championship Clash

The main event of Extreme Rules was another spectacular match in the feud between Roman Reigns and AJ Styles. The match featured several high-quality spots—few more jaw-dropping than a back body drop suffered by The Phenomenal One through an announce table.

Reigns' work won over several analysts and personalities, including Chiari and Dilbert, Mat Men Podcast and parody account Frog Balor:

A late-match chair assault by Styles touched on a central piece of the creative puzzle, as pointed out by Fighting Spirit Magazine:

Reigns successfully retained his title and Dr. Tom Prichard praised the bout:

Reigns and Styles have a wicked chemistry that was once again on display Sunday night. The spots may have been born of ones seen countless times before but were executed so well, and with such timing, they captivated a loud and vocal audience anyway. The outcome was predictable, but that did not adversely affect what was the second Match of the Year contender of the night.

The Architect Returns

The hotly anticipated return of former WWE world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins occurred Sunday night, much to the delight of fans across Twitter:

Rollins' peers, including Tye Dillinger, The Bella Twins, Hugo Knox and Mick Foley, offered their responses to the monumental return:

The Rollins return was done extremely well in that it immediately followed an outstanding match and, as a result, did not give the audience the chance to cool down. It kept things moving, maintained the heat and left fans noisy and excited to close out the show.

There was a noticeable excitement coming out of Sunday's event, and justifiably so. The return of Seth Rollins, the quality of the WWE World Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championship matches and the continuation of the New Era helped make the 2016 Extreme Rules pay-per-view one of the best of the year.

Twitter captured the reactions of fans as they happened. Whether that sentiment rings true into the future is something that bears watching in the days and weeks to come.
