WWE Extreme Rules 2016: Biggest Unanswered Questions Going into PPV
Tonight, the WWE Universe heads to Newark, New Jersey, for a night of hardcore stipulations, title defences and, hopefully, the answers to some burning questions.
Between a main event that could have major consequences and an undercard bristling with championship intrigue, tonight's show should wrap up some issues that have been lingering since WrestleMania.
With just a matter of weeks to go until Money in the Bank, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship picture is about to get interesting. Tonight, we'll see those plans start to take shape.
Here are the biggest unanswered questions going into Extreme Rules 2016.
How Does an Asylum Match Work?
1 of 3
On last week's edition of Raw, Dean Ambrose challenged Chris Jericho to a match inside his asylum, and WWE lowered its newest structure around the ring.
The open cell is shorter than the standard steel cage, which seems to encourage climbing up to the walkable platform at the peak of its perimeter. Ambrose and Jericho will need to risk those heights to grab the bevy of weapons dangling above the ring.
However, escape from the cage will not secure the win, as illustrated by this exchange between Jericho and a fan from earlier this week.
Well let's think about that for a second...how about to get into the cage?!
It appears that an Asylum match has to end via pinfall or submission, which raises the chances that we'll see a satisfying amount of carnage to end the bout.
Ambrose is known for his affinity for hardcore, from his lengthy series of stipulation matches with Bray Wyatt to his deathmatches during his time in Combat Zone Wrestling. However, his disappointing Street Fight with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania hurt his rep.
Tonight, we'll find out whether the Asylum match is an attempt to remedy that blot on Ambrose's hardcore scoresheet or a long-term addition to his character's box of tricks. If it's the latter, the first outing for the structure will have to be memorable.
Who's Going Home with the Intercontinental Championship?
2 of 3
Since WrestleMania, the Intercontinental Championship has been the focus of a lively feud between three of the most exciting talents on the WWE roster—and the current champion, The Miz.
The Miz cannot compare to the likes of Cesaro, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens in terms of in-ring ability, but he deserves a lot of credit for his part in this feud.
He's the perfect champion to be chased by three veterans of the independent scene. Miz never fails to get a rise out of crowds, and he's particularly potent now that he's got Maryse by his side.
In fact, all four men have played their roles in this feud perfectly, and as such, it's easy to imagine any one of the quartet leaving this bout with the gold.
The Intercontinental Championship is particularly important around this time of year, as its placement in relation to the Money in the Bank briefcase charts the landscape of the midcard heading into the summer.
It's unlikely—but not impossible—that the same competitor would hold the briefcase and the title at the same time, so this bout should determine the field for the ladder match on June 19.
Who's Really in Charge of The Club?
3 of 3
When AJ Styles, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows all signed to WWE earlier this year, it seemed all but certain that they would be presented as the company's take on The Bullet Club.
The faction is a bona fide phenomenon in the wrestling world, and the company had snapped up an important part of its core membership.
More to the point, WWE had access to a Bullet Club founding father who had been separated from the group for a matter of years—the former NXT Champion, Finn Balor.
When Balor lost that title to Samoa Joe shortly after WrestleMania, the stars seemed to be aligning for his WWE debut and a subsequent impact on the feud between The Club and Roman Reigns—even though his role wasn't particularly clear.
This didn't happen at Payback, but the Extreme Rules stipulation on tonight's main event might indicate that it's a possibility at the pay-per-view. Given how well-matched Reigns and Styles have been in their previous encounters, it wouldn't be surprising at all to see a run-in decide the outcome of the bouts.
