Liverpool Transfer News: Jurgen Klopp's Key Summer Targets, Latest Reds Rumours

Tom SunderlandMay 21, 2016

Squad rejuvenation appears to be Liverpool's primary concern ahead of the summer transfer window following reports the Reds are closing in on deals for Borussia Dortmund youngster Christian Pulisic and Leicester City's Ben Chilwell.

However, manager Jurgen Klopp may balk at the price tag his former club have placed on starlet Pulisic after the Daily Mail's Simon Jones reported the Black and Yellows are seeking £40 million for the teenager.

It's a monumental figure to be placed on one who only earned his professional debut four months ago, but such is the hype currently surrounding the Pennsylvania native, who is already a fully fledged United States international.

In fact, another Stars and Stripes great, ex-international ace Landon Donovan, recently had big things to say of Pulisic when speaking to Leander Schaerlaeckens of Yahoo! Sports, although he hopes the hype is calmed for now:

"

I really hope, and I know it's hard, for fans and media to curb their enthusiasm a little bit. Not because I don't think he's going to be successful. We all want for him to be successful and be a star. That's great for us. But to allow him time, to become a professional and allow him to be a kid. He's still 17. He's going to make a lot of mistakes. He's going to make some errors in everything he does. And be OK with that. Not chastise him the first time he misses a wide-open chance or makes a bad pass.

I only see Christian from afar, and I've talked to Jordan [Morris] a little bit. But guys like that, they need time to become good players. They're going to be good players. You can see it in the way that they do things and carry themselves. They're both very smart guys. They're both intelligent in the way they go about things, in the way they handle things. They're far ahead of where I was.

"

The Merseysiders may be reluctant to spend such a substantial fee on one player after splashing £32.5 million on Christian Benteke just last summer.

Pulisic has two years remaining on his first contract at the Westfalenstadion and has scored two goals in nine Bundesliga appearances to date.

The 17-year-old is still finding his feet at the top level and could make for a useful addition in midfield for the Reds, but left-back Chilwell may be considered the more desirable target at present.

Alberto Moreno attracted unwanted attention for his display in the 3-1 UEFA Europa League final defeat to Sevilla on Wednesday, but the Leicester Mercury (h/t the Mirror's James Whaling) reported Leicester are doing all they can to keep Chilwell.

Liverpool have had to cope without injured defensive duo Joe Gomez and Jon Flanagan for much of this season, but Chilwell could provide another young and talented English option in the left-back position.

The 19-year-old was recently named the Foxes' under-21 Player of the Year, and he spoke to the club's official Twitter account to touch on his progress at the King Power Stadium:

Elsewhere, it's been reported Besiktas are hopeful of tempting Reds centre-back Martin Skrtel to the Super Lig this summer. Agent Mithat Halis is quoted telling Turkish Football (h/t Dan Gibbs of the Daily Express): “Besiktas want Skrtel and make no secret of this, Turkish sides have been trying to sign him for five seasons but this summer he could make the move."

Schalke defender Joel Matip is already en route to Anfield this summer via a free transfer, and Skrtel could be allowed to leave the club, with Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho set to tide the club's defence over—although the latter may miss the start of the season due to a suspension after a failed drugs test.
