Joe PantornoMay 18, 2016

Miami Dolphins cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu suffered a dislocated knee and a torn ACL while at the University of Oregon in December 2014, which he said prompted his fall to the seventh round of the 2015 NFL draft, where he was taken by the Cleveland Browns, per Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot

Dolphins, Ekpre-Olomu Receive Some Good News

Wednesday, May 18

Ekpre-Olomu reportedly "received full medical clearance" on Wednesday, sources told NFL Network's Rand Getlin—about six weeks after the Dolphins claimed him off of waivers.

The Browns waived him in April, and Tom Reed of Cleveland.com reported at the time his knee had "not shown enough progress to the Browns' liking."

However, a source told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk that Ekpre-Olomu felt "fine" after his release: "He’s currently able to dunk a basketball again, and he’s routinely working out with NFL-caliber players, covering receivers and otherwise performing at a high level."

Ekpre-Olomu was considered a much more promising player than his seventh-round selection suggested. Almost a month before the 2015 draft, while Ekpre-Olomu was still in the early stages of recovery, NFL.com's Charles Davis ranked the cornerback as the 10th-best available at his position.

He was an All-American in 2013 and 2014 while recording nine career interceptions and six sacks.

This was a low-risk, high-reward acquisition for the Dolphins, who had a below-average pass defense last season in which they allowed 4,000 yards.

Their secondary will be a new-look group. It will be without Brent Grimes, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Brice McCain, who went to the Tennessee Titans

If Ekpre-Olomu can come back strong, then he could contribute to Miami's secondary that now will feature veteran Byron Maxwell and Xavien Howard, who was taken in the second round out of Baylor in this year's draft. If not, then the Dolphins didn't lose much in acquiring him.
