Russell Wilson's Former NC State Teammate Speaks on QB's Commencement Speech
At least one of Russell Wilson's former teammates took umbrage with the details in Wilson's commencement speech at Wisconsin on Saturday.
During the speech, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback described a scene in which then-North Carolina State football coach Tom O'Brien told him he wasn't coming back to the school and would never play in the NFL, per Joe Giglio of the News and Observer.
Former Wolfpack offensive lineman Kalani Heppe (via Bronce McClain of Carolina Brew Review on Twitter) offered a different account (warning: photo below contains NSFW language):
On Sunday, O'Brien opted to take the high road, per Giglio:
After three years at N.C. State, Wilson transferred to Wisconsin for his senior year. In his speech, the three-time Pro Bowler puts the onus on O'Brien for his departure from Raleigh, North Carolina. You can hear the story at around the 13:50 mark of the video below:
Steven Muma of SB Nation's Backing the Pack argued the situation wasn't quite so straightforward:
"O'Brien's frustration was about Wilson's unwillingness to fully commit to football, so it's amusing to see Wilson frame this as some sort of final judgment on his ability to be an NFL quarterback. Tom O'Brien might not have believed Wilson could be a decent NFL quarterback. He's also not blind. Wilson had played three very productive seasons right in front of him. This was not a football disagreement, in any way.
"
Possibly skewing the facts to better conform to an underdog story doesn't paint Wilson in a good light.
Still, he is getting the last laugh on O'Brien regardless of the circumstances of his transfer to Wisconsin. N.C. State went 8-5 in 2011 with Mike Glennon under center, while Wilson led the Badgers to an 11-3 record and a Rose Bowl appearance.
