Reshad Jones, Dolphins Reportedly Agree to 5-Year Contract Extension

Adam WellsMar 9, 2017

The Miami Dolphins and Reshad Jones have agreed to a new contract that will keep the veteran safety with the team for a long time, the team announced on Thursday.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald first reported Jones' extension and noted it will add four years to his deal, making it a five-year deal in total.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the value of the deal is $60 million over five years with $35 million guaranteed.

The 29-year-old Jones had a breakout season in 2015. He recorded a career-high five interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, and 135 combined tackles.

Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus ranked Jones as the NFL's 98th-best player in 2015 for his efforts, highlighting his ability against the run as the biggest feather in his cap:

"

Jones narrowly missed the list a year ago, but makes it this time thanks to another year of exceptional play in the box against the run. Jones had by far the highest grade of any safety against the run, and a better mark by some distance than his own performance a year ago. Only a relatively average coverage grade prevents him from being higher up the list.

"

The Dolphins waited an extra year to pay Jones, whose 2016 season was cut short by injury. He only appeared in six games before going on injured reserve after tearing his rotator cuff in an October win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Dolphins have groomed Jones into the player he has become. They made him a fifth-round draft pick in 2010, and he became a full-time starter in 2011.

The seven-year veteran was not an injury risk prior to 2016, appearing in every game he's been eligible for from 2012 through 2015, though he did serve a four-game suspension in 2014 for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Miami's marriage to Jones has been beneficial for both sides. He's a player who continues to get better and earned his new contract. The Dolphins know their secondary is exponentially better with him in it.
