Barcelona Transfer News: Latest Rumours, Top Players Targeted by Blaugrana

James DudkoMay 14, 2016

Barcelona reportedly won't be able to sign Juventus midfield linchpin Paul Pogba this season due to financial constraints. But the Catalan club are ready to add one more attack-minded playmaker to the ranks by bringing Denis Suarez back from Villarreal.

Pogba would have made an already excellent midfield one of the most powerful in Europe, but any move for the gifted France international appears off.

La Liga expert Guillem Balague told Sky Sports“Barcelona did consider Pogba but they do not have the money to buy him. Very cleverly, Pogba has left all his options open, and again, it’s still very early."

Balague also noted how Premier League sides Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as Barca's bitter rivals Real Madrid, remain keen on Pogba.

The cost of any deal for the talented 23-year-old would be high. Pogba is currently valued at £48.75 million by Transfermarkt.co.uk, but former Juve team-mate Andrea Pirlo believes Pogba is worth a world-record fee, according to the Daily Mirror's David Anderson.

In the same article, Anderson detailed how "City balked at Juve's £75 million valuation of the player last summer." It's perhaps these figures that have put Barca off.

Speculation linking Pogba with a move to the Camp Nou had been growing for most of this year. The player himself helped accelerate the rumours when he signed a replica Barca shirt at the FIFA Ballon d'Or ceremony back in January, per James Whaling of the Daily Mirror.

Then in February, Spanish publication Sport (h/t MailOnline's Nicholas Godden) suggested Pogba would reject offers from both City and Chelsea in favour of joining Barca.

But it seems as though the five-time European champions are making other plans to reshape their midfield.

Suarez on his Way Back to the Camp Nou

Part of those plans involve bringing Suarez back into the fold. It's something that has prompted Barcelona to agree to pay the €3.25 million buy-back clause in the Villarreal player's contract, according to Sport (h/t Goal's Chris Davie).

The report indicated the transfer will go through after Barca's Copa del Rey final meeting with Sevilla, but there's "also a clause in Suarez’s deal that would see Villarreal receive a payment if Barcelona sell the attacking midfielder within the next two seasons."

It's a deserved move for Suarez, who joined Villarreal on a free transfer last summer after a loan stint with Sevilla.

He has since proved to be a talented, attack-minded maestro during his time with the Yellow Submarine. The 22-year-old can play anywhere between the midfield and forward lines and has hit five goals and supplied 11 assists in all competitions, per WhoScored.com.

His performances have been good enough to garner interest from Arsenal, City and Tottenham Hotspur, according to Spanish source Marca (h/t the Sun's James Leyfield).

More than just numbers, though, Suarez has displayed qualities natural to Barca's style of play. He can thread passes between the lines and has an ability to carry the ball past defenders, reminiscent of Andres Iniesta. In many ways, Suarez looks like the obvious heir apparent to the 32-year-old pass-master.

Welcoming Suarez back into the fold is one more move toward a necessary refresh of Barcelona's midfield. He'll join 24-year-old breakout ace Sergi Roberto to supplement and eventually replace players such as Iniesta and Sergio Busquets.

Barca may miss out on one dream target in the middle, but securing a returning talent like Suarez on the cheap will be ample compensation.
