Kevin White, Duke AD, Speaks on Mike Krzyzewski's Future with Program

Tim DanielsMay 10, 2016

Duke athletic director Kevin White doesn't expect head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski to leave the sidelines anytime soon despite a recent series of health concerns.

Laura Keeley and Andrew Carter of the News & Observer reported Coach K underwent hernia repair surgery Monday after getting a left knee replacement last month. After his most recent procedure, the longtime coach sent White a message that stated: "I'm good."

The school's AD wouldn't expect anything less. The 69-year-old head coach took over the Blue Devils in 1980, meaning his stint with the program will be more than four decades long when his current contract expires in 2020-21. White told the News & Observer he expects Krzyzewski to at least see out the deal:

"

Mike has a five-year contract in place and his intention is to honor that contract at a minimum. Given his unparalleled passion for leadership and the sport of basketball it would not surprise me at all if Mike coaches beyond his current contact. To be sure, and I've said this many times, we have the greatest coach at any level and in any sport representing Duke University. So I'd stand behind any of that. And he's in great shape.

"

Along with his recent surgeries, Krzyzewski also missed his first game in more than 20 years this past season. Jack Dolgin and Sam Turken of the Chronicle noted the coach got evaluated at the school hospital after feeling "under the weather" before a road contest at Georgia Tech.

White's confidence that he's come through the various issues in "great shape" is a terrific sign of stability for the Duke program. Krzyzewski has built a foundation of long-term success, and whichever coach eventually replaces him will face an uphill battle.

It doesn't sound like the Blue Devils are planning for that next stage quite yet, though. He's under contract for five more seasons, and despite the health concerns, he's continued to maintain his commitments, including with the United States national team.

This summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will mark his last major tournament in charge before handing the reigns of Team USA to San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. He led the star-studded group to a gold medal in both 2008 and 2012, but it will be one less heavy burden on his shoulders.

Ultimately, statements like the one White made are vital at the college level. Krzyzewski has become synonymous with the Duke basketball program, so any type of uncertainty regarding his status can have a negative impact on the team's recruiting efforts.

The athletic director made it clear Coach K isn't going anywhere, which is exactly what the high-profile prospects considering Duke want to hear. And barring any further health setbacks, it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to eventually see Krzyzewski extend his stay beyond 2021 as well.
