Canelo Alvarez Talks Potential Gennady Golovkin Fight, Calls Out Abel Sanchez
Saul Alvarez didn't waste a lot of time proving his dominance in the middleweight division, knocking out Amir Khan in the sixth round Saturday and setting the stage for a possible showdown with Gennady Golovkin.
After his huge victory, Alvarez spoke to the media about his win and what could be on tap next.
Per Chris Mannix of Yahoo Sports, Alvarez told the world that he's not ducking anybody:
Alvarez also said he will "be happy not just to fight [Golovkin], but to beat him," per Mannix.
Golovkin wasn't shying away from the fight on Twitter immediately after Canelo won:
One big question mark around a potential fight between Alvarez and Golovkin involved the weight, but Alvarez said he would have "no issue" fighting at 160 pounds, per Mannix. Alvarez's last two fights have been at 155 pounds, and he's also dropped to 150 pounds and 152 pounds in the past.
Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, told ESPN.com's Dan Rafael in April that the undefeated star would not fight Alvarez at anything lower than 160 pounds:
"Why would he give in to a diva? Why would he give in to someone who's trying to change boxing? 155 is not a division. We have 17 divisions in boxing, I believe. Why would we need any more? He's not going to bow down to a diva. It's not the Canelo title. It's the middleweight title, which is 160 pounds. With Gennady, it's the principle.
"
Prior to Saturday's fight, Sanchez told Fight Hub TV (via Bad Left Hook) that Alvarez is "killing himself to make that (155-pound) weight to stay away from Golovkin."
After Sanchez suggested Canelo didn't have "testicles," according to Mannix, Canelo responded during his press conference, saying Sanchez is more than welcome to check.
It seems to be up to Canelo to make the next move. Oscar De La Hoya is a terrific, albeit calculated, promoter. He has a plan for his clients and will not budge if he doesn't end up getting everything he wants.
Golovkin has more leverage than a lot of potential opponents as an undefeated champion and arguably the most exciting fighter in the world with 32 knockouts in 35 career victories.
Alvarez needed to make a loud and clear statement against Khan to show Golovkin and his camp that he is not to be taken lightly.
It's safe to assume after a sixth-round knockout punch to Khan's face that the message was received loud and clear.
