Amir Khan Next Fight: Latest Comments, Speculation After Canelo Alvarez Knockout
It's on to the next one for Amir Khan after he got knocked out in the sixth round by Canelo Alvarez with a vicious right hand, losing their WBC Middleweight Championship fight Saturday in Las Vegas.
Khan was quicker and looked to be in control through the first few rounds, but Alvarez landed more power shots to the body and eventually connected with a right hook to the head for the knockout.
With an ice pack on his neck and his team trying to keep him upright, Khan said he thought it was time for Gennady Golovkin to take his turn against Alvarez.
“I think it’s time for Canelo to get into the ring with GGG," he said, per Bad Left Hook. "I showed my balls fighting Canelo. … I tried my best.”
Khan said he'll return to 147 pounds and fight in the welterweight division for his next bout. His trainer, Virgil Hunter, directed the talk away from Khan and said it was time for Alvarez to "quit hiding."
“Now it’s time for Canelo to take the risk and quit hiding behind little stuff," Hunter said, per Bad Left Hook. "Amir took the risk.”
Golovkin took to Twitter after the fight and seemed ready to take on Alvarez:
This was Khan's first loss since July 2012, when he fell to Danny Garcia. He went on to win his next five fights, four of them by unanimous decision. Khan is the No. 2-ranked welterweight fighter, per The Ring Magazine. If he decides to go back down to welterweight, a showdown against the undefeated Keith Thurman (26-0) or Kell Brook (36-0) could be on the horizon.
For now, Khan needs to worry about recovering after Saturday's fight.
