Floyd Mayweather Sr. Comments on Money Potentially Fighting Conor McGregor

Alec NathanMay 7, 2016

After a report from the Sun indicated a mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and MMA superstar Conor McGregor was on the verge of being made, Floyd Mayweather Sr. discussed the possibility of his son entering the ring with the former UFC welterweight champion.

In an interview with EsNews (via BloodyElbow.com's Anton Tabuena), Mayweather Sr. confirmed his son will eventually fight an MMA fighter—although he didn't reference a specific opponent.

"He had told me the other day that he's going to take another fight," Mayweather Sr. said, per Tabuena. "He told me it's (against) some kind of MMA fighter."

But when Mayweather Sr. was pressed regarding a potential fight with McGregor, he expressed complete confidence that "Money" would be able to dispatch the Irish juggernaut.

"We'd beat the hell out of that man," he said, according to Tabuena. "My son can whoop him. He's dead."

Mayweather's father also said he believes the fight would be fought under boxing rules, thus putting the undefeated former welterweight champion at a major advantage.

"Yeah, that's what I thought they would do," Mayweather Sr. said, per Tabuena "That's what everyone has been saying. I really don't know exactly when, but I'm pretty sure it's going to come around pretty soon. Won't be that long."

The Sun's James Beal and Matt Heath-Smith indicated that if the fight is agreed to, it would pay out a record £100million ($144 million) to Mayweather and £7million ($10.1 million) to McGregor.

However, UFC president Dana White dispelled the notion that two of combat sports' most famous figures could duke it out in the near future.

"It's not true; it's just a tabloid story," White said, per Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole. "And as far as I knew, Floyd is retired and he's been on a world-wide vacation and hasn't even been thinking of fighting."

Mayweather retired after moving to 49-0 following a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in September, but rumors of a return to the ring have kicked up a notch in recent weeks.

Not only did Mayweather tell Showtime's Jim Gray that he would consider a return if he was presented a nine-figure payday, per Iole, but ESPN.com's Darren Rovell reported the fighter's company, Mayweather Productions, filed trademarks for "TMT 50" and "TBE 50" on April 21.

Needing just one more win to break Rocky Marciano's undefeated record and move to 50-0 all-time, it's safe to say Mayweather will generate plenty of hype if he returns to the ring—regardless of who the opponent is.
