WWE NXT Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from May 4

Erik BeastonMay 5, 2016

As if winning the NXT Championship from Finn Balor in Lowell, Massachusetts, was not enough, Samoa Joe exploded onto the screen on the May 4 episode of NXT and wasted little time in giving the brand a taste of what it can expect from its new face.

Joe made it clear that he does not believe there is another Superstar in the NXT locker room who can do anything about him and his reign over the brand. To support his bold claim, he stalked to the ring later in the night and dismantled the debuting Eric Young in impressive fashion, cutting his offense off at every turn and tapping him out to the Coquina Clutch.

It was as thorough an ass-kicking in an extended match fans have witnessed since Brock Lesnar tossed John Cena around the ring 16 times at SummerSlam 2014. Joe looked like the worldbeater he should have been portrayed as since day one, an unstoppable force the NXT Universe will have to endure until someone steps up and knocks him off his throne.

The undisputed biggest winner from Wednesday's broadcast, he is joined by a resurgent female competitor and a new face looking for a fresh start. Not so lucky was a team who looked to be back in title contention a week ago but did not fare as well when they battled former champions The Revival.

Winner: Nia Jax

Nia Jax's presence is one of the most underrated elements of her performance. She comes through the curtain and carries herself like the most physically intimidating badass on the roster. Even Joe, for everything he has done to transform himself into the baddest man on the NXT roster, cannot hold a candle to the way Jax represents herself through body language, facial expressions and the look in her eyes as she enters the squared circle.

Couple that with a simple-yet-effective, punishing offense and you have a performer whose relative lack of experience is camouflaged by a young woman who has excelled in other areas of her craft.

Wednesday's complete and utter destruction of third-generation wrestler Tessa Blanchard continued her push toward a showdown with Asuka over the NXT Women's Championship. While it may be too early in her development to put the title on her at this point, Jax is going to hold plenty of gold for both NXT and WWE one day.

Losers: The Hype Bros

Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley appeared to be back in the thick of the NXT Tag Team Championship chase following a victory over Blake and Murphy on last week's show. A post-match sneak attack by The Revival appeared to set up a feud between the two, perhaps with a No. 1 contendership at stake. Instead, it was merely to set up a one-sided enhancement match that had Rawley and Ryder looking weaker than ever.

Dash and Dawson tore through the overly energetic babyface duo, finishing Rawley off with The Shatter Machine and moving on to bigger and better things.

There are two negatives from Wednesday's match.

First, Ryder goes from a heartwarming Intercontinental Championship victory at WrestleMania 32 to a demotion back to NXT. Second, the loss erases any credibility or momentum the team built last week. Why? To put The Revival over one week after the issues between the teams initiated?

It makes little sense and does the babyface duo, desperately seeking to emerge from the basement of the tag division, no favors.

Winner: Eric Young

There are going to be fans who complain that NXT is overcome with TNA rejects, guys who hopped off the Titanic while they still could. In reality, Triple H has continued to make good on his pledge to bring the best wrestlers to the brand. Sure, guys like Eric Young, Austin Aries and Samoa Joe were woefully misused by the crack staff in charge of Impact Wrestling but that does not take away from their considerable in-ring skills.

Young is a damn fine wrestler, and he proved it during Wednesday's main event, even if he did more bumping than anything as Joe ran over him on the first night of his oppressive reign. More importantly, he generated a Superstar reaction from the very judgmental fans in Full Sail University. He was treated like a big deal, which supports the idea that TNA's outcasts are still respected and coveted.

If Wednesday's performance was more than a one-time deal, Young will find himself great success in an NXT looking to replace recent call-ups.
