10 WWE Superstars Who Would Have Excelled in the Attitude Era
If you ask wrestling fans what their favorite period in wrestling history is, most of them would respond with the Attitude Era.
The exact dates are subject to debate, but the majority of people consider the years between 1996 and 2001 to mark this period.
It was a time when WWE focused less on colorful characters and put most of its effort into shock value, mature themes and proving wrestling wasn't just for kids anymore.
Superstars like The Rock, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Hardy Boyz and The Undertaker thrived during this time, but after years of being accused of not producing entertainment which was appropriate for children, WWE changed to a PG environment.
While WWE still wants to maintain a family-friendly image, there are a lot of Superstars who would have excelled when WWE was an edgier product.
The Superstars mentioned will only be those from the main roster and are not being ranked, so don't worry about where anyone is listed.
Dean Ambrose
1 of 6Dean Ambrose is one of the most obvious Superstars who would have found great success during the Attitude Era.
He would have had more freedom to embrace the crazier aspects of his persona in the late '90s, which would have led to some great confrontations with some of the other insane characters.
Just imagine how awesome it would have been to see Ambrose and Brian Pillman try to out-crazy each other, or see The Lunatic Fringe and Mankind attempt to maim each other in a Boiler Room Brawl.
Ambrose's character feels shackled by the limitations imposed by management. He still manages to be entertaining every time he steps in front of a camera, but he could have been even better 15 years ago.
Seth Rollins
2 of 6Seth Rollins is known for taking big risks during his matches, but his personality has made him so much more than a high-flyer.
As soon as he turned on The Shield and joined The Authority, Rollins blossomed into one of the best heels WWE has seen in years.
He somehow managed to make the crowd hate him while also chanting "This is awesome!" during most of his matches. It takes a special kind of talent to pull something like that off.
Rollins is flashy, outspoken and willing to do anything to make sure he steals the show every night. Those are all qualities which would have pushed him right to the top during the Attitude Era.
Baron Corbin
3 of 6Baron Corbin is still trying to establish himself as a force to be reckoned with on the main roster, but his persona definitely would have fit in with all the edgy characters of the late '90s.
Times are changing, but we are still a society that judges people based on their appearance, and few Superstars have a presence quite like Corbin.
His size, tattoos and personality traits make you believe he is not the kind of person you want to meet in a dark alley late at night.
Corbin looks like he belongs in a biker gang, so he would have meshed well with guys like The Disciples of Apocalypse or The Undertaker (when he ditched the mystical parts of his gimmick for a bandana and a Harley).
The Wyatt Family
4 of 6Erick Rowan, Luke Harper, Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt are four Superstars who might have been properly used during the Attitude Era instead of being wasted like they have been for the past year.
Wyatt's feud with The Undertaker fell short of expectations, but had he and his bearded brothers fought The Ministry of Darkness, it could have been one of the most entertaining storylines of the late '90s.
During that time, The Undertaker took his gimmick to a new level, and having fewer restrictions allowed him to do things like crucify Stephanie McMahon in an attempt to sacrifice her.
The Wyatts would have fit right in and probably would have been even more successful than they are in today's environment. It's too bad they were all born 20 years too late.
Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady
5 of 6Enzo Amore has quickly established himself as one of the best trash-talkers in WWE today. Just imagine how good he would have been during a time when programming was TV-14 instead of TV-PG.
Colin Cassady is also good on the mic, but Enzo is miles ahead in terms of creativity. It doesn't matter if his material is off the top of his head or written ahead of time, because his delivery is what makes him special.
Think about Amore and Big Cass having promo battles with The Rock or Stone Cold. It would have made for some of the most entertaining television in the history of WWE.
Rocky and Austin still show up occasionally, so there is a small possibility we could see something involving the young tag team and the two greatest performers of the Attitude Era, but don't hold your breath.
Sasha Banks
6 of 6WWE has been trying hard to get rid of the stigma surrounding the women's division for the past year, but its first revolution was during the Attitude Era. Trish Stratus, Victoria, Molly Holly and many others proved you could be beautiful while still producing matches people wanted to see.
If there is any current performer who would have fit right in with those trailblazing women, it's Sasha Banks.
She likes to take risks in the ring, has the technical ability to rival anyone on the roster and has enough charisma for two Superstars.
Banks is a true fan of the sport. She wasn't recruited after modeling to become a wrestler. This is what she has wanted to do since she was young.
She would have been right there with the Litas and Jacquelines of the era, having incredible matches and looking good while doing it.
The 10 people on this list all would have made great assets during the Attitude Era, but they're not the only ones. Who do you think would have excelled during that period in WWE history?
