Stephen Curry Wins 2015-16 Magic Johnson Award: Latest Comments and Reaction
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry added another honor to his already cluttered trophy cabinet Tuesday, winning the 2015-16 Magic Johnson Award, per Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle.
According to Simmons, the Professional Basketball Writers Association recognizes the "player who best combines excellence on the court with cooperation and dignity in dealing with the media and public."
The Charlotte Observer's Rick Bonnell thought Curry was a more-than-deserving winner:
Basketball Insiders' Alex Kennedy was also complimentary of the reigning MVP:
As his profile has grown in the NBA, Curry has become a bigger ambassador for the game through his work both on the court and off it. Not every NBA star gets to film a commercial with President Barack Obama:
In December, CSNBayArea.com's Monte Poole explained, beyond his prolific three-point shooting, what makes Curry stand out among his peers:
"He signs dozens of autographs at every arena, home and away. He poses for selfies, home and away. He gives honest answers to postgame questions, reasonable or not. He won't hesitate to pull up, with his wife sitting in the passenger's seat, to the Chick-fil-A drive-thru and order a sandwich. The list of charities in which he participates is longer than the lines awaiting those autographs.
"
Warriors general manager Bob Myers was effusive in his praise of the transcendent point guard while making a case for why he should be named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year for 2015:
"Most of the time when you meet a famous person you're disappointed, because they didn't live up to the image you'd created in your head. Sometimes you meet a famous person that does meet your expectations and you say, "Wow, they really are great." And sometimes, on the most rare of occasions, you meet someone who exceeds every expectation imaginable. Steph is that guy. He's the rarest breed. You hear all these great things about him and not only are they true, but there's even more the public will never know.
"
The Warriors continue to steamroll the competition in his absence. The 28-year-old remains out of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Portland Trail Blazers while dealing with a sprained right knee he suffered in the first round of the 2016 playoffs, making Tuesday's announcement somewhat bittersweet.
But the Magic Johnson Award is unlikely to be the last accolade Curry wins this year. In due time, he'll almost certainly double his MVP collection and maybe even capture a second consecutive NBA title.
