Zurich Classic 2016: Sunday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights
Weather continues to wreak havoc on the 2016 Zurich Classic in Avondale, Louisiana, as it forced the PGA Tour to announce it will shorten the tournament to 54 holes and that play will resume on Monday after it squeezed in three hours on Sunday.
Before play was suspended again, Brian Stuard and Jhonattan Vegas were tied for the lead at 13 under par through five holes. Bobby Wyatt is right behind them at 12-under par, but he will only have nine holes left to play.
Per the PGA Tour Media, play will begin at 8 a.m. ET on Monday. Here's the full leaderboard from TPC Louisiana:
In what has become a recurring tweet from the PGA Tour, the course essentially looked like a small lake:
The bad news is the weather report for Monday on PGATour.com calls for thunderstorms with an 80 percent chance of rain, with the chances increasing from 11 percent at tee time to 64 percent at noon.
Fortunately, everyone was on the course and had played at least five holes at the time officials halted play on Sunday.
Some of the golfers were able to keep their competitiveness going while waiting for the weather to subside. Jason Day and Marc Leishman decided to engage in a gentlemen's game of Connect Four, via the PGA Tour Media:
Golf is a mental game more than it is physical, so keeping the mind sharp with strategy is going to serve Day and Leishman well. Day in particular still has a chance to win at 10 under par through eight holes.
Wyatt has a chance to become the Cinderella story if he can come from behind on Monday to win. The American entered play this weekend ranked 1,198th in the Official World Golf Ranking, per the PGA Tour.
Prior to the rain, Wyatt was making a big move at six under par on the front nine. Justin Ray of Golf Channel noted he made the tournament on a sponsor's invite and that this is his first event of 2016 in the United States with official world ranking points.
There's still a lot to be sorted out and a short amount of time on Monday to do it. Stuard has been atop the leaderboard since Thursday's opening round and was off to a solid start on Sunday before play was called.
With a tight bunch atop the leaderboard, Stuard and Vegas will have to be on point right away. Wyatt's lack of experience in this scenario may work against him, allowing a player like Day to move up, but the course conditions are going to be the key factor determining a winner on Monday.
