Detroit Lions Mock Draft and Big Board: Updated Day 3 Predictions

Brandon AlisogluApr 29, 2016

General manager Bob Quinn believes that you build a team from the trenches out. At least that's how his first three picks as the head of the Detroit Lions have made it seem.

Offensive tackle Taylor Decker and center Graham Glasgow will bring a power element that was missing from last season. Second-round pick A'Shawn Robinson will be an immovable object in the middle of the defense that allows the linebackers to flow to the ball.

There's still one day left in the draft, and Detroit still needs help in the secondary and at defensive end. Will Quinn find those pieces in the later rounds or focus on upgrading talent regardless of position?

Top 100 Big Board

1 of 5

For the last time this year, here's a top-100 big board for the Lions.

Coincidentally, the two highest-rated players left on the board are defensive tackles. The selection of A'Shawn Robinson in the second round mitigated the need, but Bob Quinn has proven he likes beef, and these two bring too much meaty talent to be ignored.

Connor Cook is another odd inclusion in the top four, but you can't deny his tangibles. As for his intangibles, something must be up for him to still be available on Day 3.

Round 4

2 of 5

Round 4, Pick 111: Avery Young, OT, Auburn

The Lions didn't solve all of their offensive tackle problems with Taylor Decker.

Cornelius Lucas and Corey Robinson haven't looked like anything more than limited projects. And the three veterans—Riley Reiff, Geoff Schwartz and Michael Ola—are all set to be free agents next offseason.

Young gives the Lions a more talented charge to work with and is the brother of former Lions defensive end Willie Young. The 6'5", 328-pounder, per NFL.com, has the power to sustain blocks and deal with power rushers.

Plus, he has experience inside and out, meaning he can find work as a versatile reserve in 2016.

Round 5

3 of 5

Round 5, Pick 151: David Morgan, TE, UTSA

This pick will happen. Morgan is a gem who has been buried in the Texas dirt for too long and needs to be unearthed.

Whether Tim Wright or Brandon Pettigrew will make the final roster is irrelevant. Morgan is an upgrade over Wright in almost every way, and while he can't block as well as Pettigrew, he's a much better receiving option.

Morgan can solve some problems in the red zone and provide another seam-busting tight end who will pull down catches in traffic.

Round 5, Pick 169: Charles Tapper, DE, Oklahoma

Detroit didn't spend any early draft capital on a defensive end, leaving it few options for Day 3.

Tapper will not fill the reserve pass-rushing specialist hole. He has solid straight-line speed but hasn't shown the bend or moves to consistently get to the quarterback on later downs.

He can help set the edge against the run and take over a Jason Jones-type role, albeit on fewer snaps.

Round 6

4 of 5

Round 6, Pick 191: Cody Core, WR, Ole Miss

This pick stems from the same logic as the Dave Morgan selection. There are technically other players who can fill out the depth chart, but Core is a chance to upgrade the talent level.

Core uses all of his 6'3", 205-pound body well to wall off defensive backs and make contested catches. He's also deceptive after the catch, using underrated speed and superb vision to extend plays.

Lastly, he handled special teams duties at Ole Miss. That will certainly endear him to Bob Quinn.

Round 6, Pick 202: Scooby Wright, LB, Arizona

Scooby Wright doesn't have eye-popping measurables. He also comes with health risks and a history of knee injuries.

Wright did put up eye-popping numbers in 2014, ending the season with 163 tackles (29 for a loss), 14 sacks and a slew of national awards. The following two years weren't met with the same type of success or production.

However, that potential is still worth a look on special teams in the sixth round.

Round 6, Pick 210: Vernon Adams, QB, Oregon

Quinn said he wanted to draft a quarterback every now and then. That signal-caller is Vernon Adams here.

Adams proved he can adjust to a new scheme quickly, putting together a solid year despite only playing at Oregon for one season. His six interceptions also bode well for his decision-making.

Detroit will be looking for a quarterback who can help Matthew Stafford on the sideline. Adams can handle that duty and possibly develop into a long-term backup.

Round 7

5 of 5

Round 7, Pick 236: Deiondre Hall, CB, Northern Iowa

The seventh round is a time for either filling out your special teams or taking flyers on intriguing talents in need of seasoning.

Deiondre Hall checks both boxes.

Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin will love his 6'2" frame. Hall uses his height and incredible length well when attacking passes in the air. And his 82 tackles last season prove he's willing to mix it up against the run.

Hall will struggle against quicker receivers and precise routes. Like I said, it's a flyer, but it's an interesting one.
