Arsenal vs. Norwich: Arsene Wenger's Key Pre-Match Press Conference Quotes

Rory MarsdenApr 29, 2016

Arsene Wenger hopes Arsenal go on to win the UEFA Champions League and consistently compete for the Premier League when he finally departs as manager of the north London club.

Calls have been increasing for Wenger to leave Arsenal after more than 20 years in charge following another season in which the Gunners have failed to maintain a title challenge in the Premier League and are now struggling to hold on to fourth spot, per James Olley in the Evening Standard.

They were also knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the sixth season in a row, and Wenger, speaking ahead of Saturday's clash with relegation-threatened Norwich City, said he will continue to be an Arsenal fan after he leaves, per Joe Mewis in the Mirror:

"

I wish when I go the club goes higher up and wins the [Champions League] and championship every year. I will be the biggest supporter in the stand because I will feel i have contributed to that.

You have to remember when we built the stadium we had five to seven difficult financial years. We had to be three years in the Champions League and have a 54,000 average attendance. We had to sell our best players and survive. And we didn’t do three years out of five we did five years out of five. During that time it was very competitive.

"

The French manager is aware that his side have underperformed this season, and he bemoaned the fact that Arsenal could have won the title after being top of the table at the turn of the year, per the Gunners' Twitter feed:

Arsenal's fans are planning to protest against the club's hierarchy during the Norwich match, which is likely to cause a slightly bitter atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium, per Goal's Chris Wheatley.

But it is still a must-win game for the hosts as they are only five points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United, who have a game in hand.

Wenger indicated that it has been at home that Arsenal have lost the title, per BBC Match of the Day's Gary Lineker:

The Canaries are fighting for their Premier League lives as they currently lie in the relegation zone, and Wenger gave his assessment of the battle at the bottom, per Arsenal:

Norwich have won two of their last four matches and will be a threat to Arsenal as they look to secure Champions League football next season.

Wenger reported, though, that his side could be given a boost by the return of midfielder Santi Cazorla, who has been out of action since November, per ESPN FC's Ben Dinnery:

While some Premier League sides look to have taken their foot off the pedal with the season drawing to a close, Arsenal and Norwich still have plenty to fight for at either end of the table.

The reverse fixture back in November ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that would likely be useless to either side on Saturday, and Arsenal's quality and home advantage should give them the edge.
