Ryan Tannehill Comments on Ndamukong Suh's Absence from Dolphins Workouts

Tyler ConwayApr 28, 2016

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill took to the media Thursday in an attempt to quell rumors the team is unhappy with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh's absence from offseason workouts.

“I’m sure he’s working to get better doing his own thing,” Tannehill said, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. “No hard feelings. He’s done things a certain way his whole career, a process he goes through both mentally and physically. Sometimes you have to go through your own process to feel fully prepared in your own way.”

Suh, 29, has skipped voluntary workouts throughout his NFL career. He's worked out at Nike's training facility in Oregon dating back to this time with the Detroit Lions

While this should come as no surprise to those used to how Suh handles his business, it's apparently rubbed some teammates the wrong way. Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reported players are "privately steamed" at Suh. He's had some issues since his arrival in Miami, including some reported chemistry problems with teammates, per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport (h/t NFL.com's Kevin Patra).

The result was a 2015 season viewed far worse than what it was. Suh recorded 61 tackles and six sacks and ranked 27th in quarterback hurries, per Sporting Charts. The tackles were his most since his rookie campaign, and he more than doubled his hurries from 2014. Despite any problems Suh might have had acclimating to his new team, he remains one of the most dominant forces in football.

Perhaps that's why no one in Miami—not even new head coach Adam Gase—seems willing to call him out.

“When a guy calls you and tells you he’s not coming, you know you always say the same thing—you’d love everybody to be here,” Gase said, per Chris Perkins of the Sun Sentinel. “You want to develop that team bonding. But it’s voluntary.”

The reality of the situation is it's likely no one would care if Suh missed voluntary workouts if a new coaching staff weren't in place. We're still more than four months away from the start of the season. The team hasn't even added its draft picks yet as of Thursday afternoon. Improvements at this time of the year—whatever they may be—are small.

Suh's the best player on the roster. If this is the way Suh's always done things, it's probably best to keep it that way given his production level.
